So, I have steering wheel shake that begins at 65mph, and gets progressively more violent. Intermittently, >20%, I can get up to 75, smooth as glass, hmm? So, before I bring Avocado in for a 500 mile oil change after an engine re-build, I want to narrow the possibilities. What I see as probable, as previously suggested, are: 1) ball joints 2) bushings on the control arms 3) Transmission (although I don’t think so since if I coast at 70 down the grade, vibration continues) What it is not, as they have already been replaced are: 4 tie rods - 2 new front tires (old had good tread, but with cups and flat spots, probably assoc with shake) - balance and alignment - Individually all these upgrades incrementally increased speed from 60 to 70mph before shaking - - New flywheel - machined pressure plate (or is it the other way around?) - KYB strut upgrade at some point, appear good - Gabriel shocks rear, new - engine/motor mounts good - don’t have hub-caps - Pacer rim upgrades that all appear good - Rims rotated front to back, shake continues - My guess is everything replaced so far fixes a symptom, and not the cause. Anyone else have the same problem that found a solution/fix? Anyone have a best guess as to root cause? - Thanks for all your suggestions - |

might want to check your rack and pinion. If nothing else at least take it apart, remove all the old grease and pack new grease tight in it. |

Did you get your car fixed. I have the same problem and have done almost the same as you in new parts.

You didnt say anything about tires. Did you run your hand around all tires and check for bubbles and shifted cords? |

2 new front tires installed, high speed balanced and aligned. Did reduce shake, which means can drive at a higher speed of almost 70 before steering wheel shake. (so why can’t I get to 85 like my brother’s ’91 POS Tercel?? oh, and mother's POS '93 Mazda Protégé) OLD front tires were flat spotted and cupped, probably a symptom of problem, not the cause. Which is why I really want to fix shake, otherwise it will tear the car apart, tires, engine mounts, train, engine, etc. then just a piece of trash car. Or I could just use it as a MoPed and not take it on the Freeway, hmm, food for thought...MoPed Metro. 2 front strut mounts ordered and in the shop for install on Monday 8/24, crossing my fingers, please. Mech. put Avocado up on rack, pulled and pushed, only thing he could see was excessive 1” play on strut mounts - ball joints, bushings, etc, etc. look good. Lets hope the KYB struts (install date???) are still good and not also shot from bad mounts, which Mech. can’t tell 'till takes apart for mounts. |

so, after re-reading the steering-wheel shake (my) post, is there anything in the FRONT-end NOT to look at? so far the list is every nut, bolt, moving part, rack n pinion, cv, drive shaft, tires, tie-rods, brake rotors, hub caps, rims, mounts - can we make it a Short list of what not to look at?? Like the CAT bearings??? or the DiLithium Crystals? the water-pump pulsating water through the engine core? |

Along with the CAT bearings, the DiLithium Crystals maybe you should look for advise within yourself or maybe somewhere else. Evidentally the time people take to help you here is of no value to you. |

Only two tires on front? No problems at all with rear tires? |

I am also trying to fix the same problem. My starts to shake at 55. I've replaced no parts yet but will start this weekend. How does you frame look around your control arm mounts? Might be a week point that only flexes at speed. Also a bad tire on the back will make the car shake. If all else fails try going to a different place to get the alignment. I had a 95 grand am and I had to take it to 4 places and trashed 2 sets of tires before I found someone who could get it right. |

Tires (my vote) = simple = first type of thing to check. Look for flat spots or bumps. Start with easy checks, then go to more complex. Edited by crankcase, Aug 26 2012, 01:30 AM.

this is from a post I had. I working the to fix the same thing. hewho808 Aug 25 2012, 03:41 PM strut tower braces? I'm not sure what those are? are they a after market add-on? this thread has pics of the upper front, lower front, and upper back strut tower braces. yes, they are after market. Members on this website make them to sell----lower front is the most effective and (naturally the most expensive) http://geometroforum.com/topic/3734466/1/ EDIT: the towers in the Geos are kinda weak after so many years and flex quite a bit. these braces keep them where they should be. some who have installed the front lower one have found that they have to use a come-along to get the bottom strut tower back in alignment to get the brace on--------- Edited by Old Man, Yesterday, 5:04 PM. |
