i got a 4 inch stone cylinder hone from harbor freight today after seeing it was 100 bucks for a berry hone. is that the right size? it looks like it expands and shrinks. also how do i use this thing? i assume you hook it up to a drill and push it in and out of the cylinder?

i figured i'd ask the pros rather than the nubs on youtube.

yep thats all i do. i usually turn on the parts washer and let the fluid flow while i hone the cylinder with a drill. doesnt usually take much honing.

Squeeze the hone to install and remove it from the cylinder. Don't slide it vertically at any time unless it is turning. Use a variable speed drill and slowly move the hone up and down so the entire cyl surface is honed. The marks on the cylinder wall should form a crosshatch pattern at 30-45 degrees.

Keep the stones lubricated when honing.

I use kerosene. I guess anything oily and thin that will wash the grind dust out of the hones so they dont gall the cylinder.
