For pinpointing a noise I highly recommend a Mechanic's Stethoscope. Usually around $5 at harbor Freight.

I've been told you can also use a long screwdriver with the handle held to your ear or a 1-2' long rubber hose to listen through. :)

There can be some scraping of the timing belt on the timing belt cover, a stuck lifter is a high pitch tapping, a broken EGR gasket mimics that and is basically and exhaust leak. Mine got a little quieter after changing to synthetic oil but that may have been a delusion. :-/

I thought I was headed for a rebuild on the Wife's '96 Geo when I found the EGR gasket problem with the stethoscope. My Geo had a stuck vacuum advance ticking similar to lifters. Now I spray carb/choke cleaner in the vacuum lines once in a while. :)

Check oil, if slightly low fill to full with Marvel mystery oil. If full, change filter and fill to full with MMO. Drive a few hundred miles and change the oil. Clean it out a little bit. Engine sounds way too loud to me.

Good bye

Kind of sounds like the exhaust donut at the manifold is bad. Might be a good place to start.

I think your mechanic is on the right track after listening to it. You have some lifter noise for some reason. Maybe worn lobes on the camshaft.

Donut, or exhaust doughnut, is the big fiber o-ring that seals the exhaust manifold to the pipe dropping down off of it. (down pipe)

Cam shaft is what opens and closes the valves.

It's connected to the crankshaft by a belt.

Might not be a bad idea to get a Factory Service Manual for your year Geo. E-Bay is a good place to look.

For general knowledge, a Haynes manual is nice. But be warned, Haynes covers a wide range of model years. By no means as accurate and precise as an FSM. Haynes will give you the general idea as to what you're up against. A True Factory Service Manual is needed when you're ready to dig in.
