Now that my 1994 Metro is running well, I plan a much needed cleaning of the interior. It looks like it was used by a drywall contractor as there is white dust/mud present. It is FILTHY but nothing is torn up so I think it will cleanup nicely. I plan to use carpet shampoo and laundry soap on the seats and carpet but what is suggested for the dash? I have heard Windex is good on dashes as other products can cause more harm than good. My dash is decent and I want to keep it that way. Is there any type of shine-up product that won't dry it out over the long run? Thanks, Conor |

I belong to a couple of detailing forums. I use Meguiar's products. My favorite interior products are Meguiar's M40 (vinyl rubber treatment), it cleans pretty darn good and protects. It leaves a slight shine, but if you "buff" the plastic, the shine isn't that bad. I spray on an applicator and rub it in, let it sit then wipe. I also use Meguiars Natural Shine, same prinicipal. I use Meguiar's Quik Detailer for general cleaning, it has UV protection and great on dust. Use Microfiber cloths as anything else leaves lint. If it needs major cleaning, I use Meguiar's Detailing line of All Purpose Cleaner Plus (APC+). It's a low foaming cleaner and works great on seats. I usually spray on fabric, agitate with a wet terry cloth (pretty wet), then rinse in same fashion and remove what I can with my shop vac and let it dry. Edited by Nappers, Aug 15 2012, 10:59 AM.

Drywall, eh. Sure it wasn't owned by Kate Moss in 2006-2007?I pulled the seats out and sprayed everything with Simple Green. A little more concentrated than the recommended dilution and let it sit for maybe 5 minutes. I used a Shop Vac to vacuum the Simple Green/water out of the carpet and seats. Leaves a nice scent without using an air freshener. For the dash I got a dash carpet off eBay for like $25.

Thanks. I actually found the interior to be pretty dirty. I removed the seats and pulled the carpet up and actually pressure washed/shop vacced the interior with the lowest pressure tip and Tide which I have done on other nasty vehicles. I removed the negative battery cable just in case... This seemed to work quite well and got rid of the mouse urine, mud, etc. I also have the body plugs out so it can drain. I also looked in the holes in the side of the rail that forms the rocker panel while the carpet is up. I noticed lots of mouse droppings, dirt, some half eaten seeds/nuts, and nesting material (shredded carpet pad and leaves). There was also some minor surface rust so I pressure washed/shop vacced this area too but the water doesn't seem to want to drain and I can't find a plug. I guess this is why this part likes to rust. Anyway, I used the shop vac to get as much of the water out as possible and the mouse nesting material. I see water slowly dripping from the rear of this area so I hope this is what is draining right now. There is also some minor rust on the floor pan so I plan to rust proof these areas once it is good and dry. Will the rocker panel area drain out over time. The car is pointed uphill. Would it work better facing downhill? Thanks, Conor |
