how much smoke is your engine supposed to blow just after a rebuild and how long will it blow smoke? i just finished my rebuild and did everything exactly like it said in the thread and there is quite a bit of smoke blowing out the exhaust. it doesn't really seem to be dying down either.

ok so i thought i had fixed the problem earlier. after a 20 or so mile drive i wasn't seeing any smoke. later in the day when i was delivering pizzas and it had gotten dark enough so that people would turn on their lights, i could see smoke every time i took off. it would let out a very noticeable puff of smoke when i took off and sometimes when i shifted. at idle it would let out just barely enough so you could see it and when you revved up it would become quite noticeable.

i thought maybe i just needed to drive it harder, so after work i went and drove on the highway doing about 70 for 10 or so miles. no good, it smoked the same, if not worse than before.

it is also making quite a bit more soot now than before the rebuild. usually i could scratch the soot with my key and 50 or so miles later i could still see the scratches in the soot. now after about 3-5 miles it is sooted over again.

is this normal? lets say i didn't pay too good of attention to the position of the rings and they were closer to lined up than they are supposed to, could that cause this to happen?

i've got over 100 miles on it now and it's still smoking.

It will take up to 50 miles for the rings to COMPLETELY seal.

Some engines it takes longer than others. I run my engines a long time before they hit the road.

Got 70 MPG?

Did you put the oil check valve back in the block before putting the head on?

My fresh rebuilt engine in Nightmare dont smoke a bit, at all, Just on normal morning startups when the exaust is cold, and builds moisture when it warms up.

probably not. i put everything i took off back on, but i'm not sure what part that is, picture please?

if it's the thing poking up through the head gasket in the upper passenger side of the engine and the lower driver side in this pic then no... i don't remember there being one of those when i removed the old head.
