Put new head and gasket on. Took on 1st road trip to work. Ran pretty good other than stumbling a little bit on the lower end getting going. Coming home it got worse and worse and started getting warm. Got it home and it was low on water. Filled it up, fired it up and it's blowing water out the radiator again? Head gasket not seal correctly? Head was checked and rebuilt at trusted machine shop. Used a felpro head gasket, so what am I doing wrong? |

How did you torque the head down? Did you use new head bolts? Did you set the timing with a light? Maybe the system needed burped and filled. |

I assume you had an air pocket in the system. Fill it up and top off the overflow and run it again. |

I didn't use new head bolts.....now, now no name calling! I did torque them to spec though. No timing light. Just isn't running right, a little white smoke when you throttle it. Still timing? |

A couple of things to keep in mind on these little engines. They do require "burping" when filling the cooling system after a tear down. You get everything ready so that you can start the engine and let it come up to operating temp for a few minutes with the radiator cap off. Keep adding more coolant until it doesn't take anymore. Secondly, remember if you have a system that's not completely full you can run into the situation where the temp gauge shows normal yet the engine is actually hot enough to damage the head gasket. If there is no water covering the temp sender unit it will not register properly. The white smoke is disturbing. Was it doing that before? If not, you might have a leaking head gasket allowing water to enter the combustion chamber. What you're seeing might be actually steam. Keep looking. You can figure it out. |

I did not use new head bolts, and have about 7000 miles on the engine and it runs flawlesely! Head bolt is just a way for car part store to make more money! |

Until one snaps. The problem isn't them not sealing properly, the problem is taking it apart next time, the bolt is more likely to break off into the block. |
