Hi there. I have a 94 Geo Metro 3cyl base model. I have a oil leak somewhere, but its at a place where I am assuming if gets burned off after leaking out. I never have oil on the ground, but yet when I check the oil level after a few fuel fill ups, it's about 1qt low. I am guessing I need to do a oil dye test and run a UV light to it to diagnose where it's leaking. Has anyone ran into this problem? And if so where is a common place where I would need to change the gasket? Also is there any other way I could be burning the oil? Thanks for any input or help! -Alex |

Pull the spark plugs and look for oil on the plugs. Compression check is next. There are directions on the forum for checking the compression. |

120,000 miles. My guess is the valve cover gasket. I am going to replace this along with the timing belt in the next week. I will look into compression testing if this doesn't solve it. I did replace the plugs and the old ones had no oil on them. Also I am not blowing out black smoke so this is leading me to believe it's the valve cover gasket which leaks on to the block and tranny. Thus it burns off before getting to the bottom of the engine to drip on the ground. I'll keep you guys informed on if this solves my issue! Thanks! |

If you're leaking oil by the transmission, check the oring on the distributor, too. |

I suspect it might be getting burned and you can't see the smoke as there might not be enough to see. I was having similar problems on my new Geo and ended up giving it a good engine flush with Seafoam and MMO. I would also check your PCV and see if there is oil inside if your air cleaner housing. It probably doesn't help, but when I had Festivas they normally ate about a quart every 1000-1200 miles. Even the engine I had professionally rebuilt, and dry as a bone. No fouled plugs, no smoke, no seeping gaskets. This was under very hard daily use as a commuter car, over 100 miles a day. I once dug up a mazda data sheet that listed the normal oil consumption for the 1.3L mazda engine in these cars as 1 qt per 1500 miles. I have no idea if geos are similar, but it's something to consider. However in my swift so far, I find it consumes no oil at all after several thousand miles. Are you just puttering around or are you beating the engine on the highway daily? |

There is oil on my tranny so the o ring around the distributor cap could be causing this. Ill flush some seafoam through her and replace the o ring and see what that does. This is my daily driver and I put about 80 to 100 per day. I'm a construction engineer so I'm going to multiple sights a day. I burn about a quart of oil every 400 miles if that gives you an idea. Ill keep ya guys posted. Thanks! |

That's a lot of oil. I had a broken piston burn that much. Do any of the plugs look black and oily? |

No I just changed them. What's a good alternative for the distributor o-ring? Dealer wants to charge $20 plus hsipping and no auto parts store carries it. I refuse to pay that kind of money for a small little o-ring. RTV silicone?? |

Take the old O ring to a hardware store and match it up. might find one in a faucet repair kit or some such thing. They also have trays that have many different sizes and you might pick one up for a quarter. |
