2000 chevy metro - 5 speed Im wondering if anyone out there has tried and had problems taking the black side cover (covering 5th gear) off of thier transmission? Mine has two studs I can't get out. I can get the nuts off the studs but the cover wont come off because of the studs. Any tips? She goes thru all the gears fine except wont stay in 5th gear unless you hold it. Im guessing it needs a 5th Syncro. Can you order just the 5th gear syncro? |

The studs are part of the transmission case. You just need to wiggled the black cover off. Don't know of a 5th gear source, sorry. Edited by Jittney, Aug 20 2012, 12:52 PM.

Thanks for reply, The washers on the studs dont fit over the stud threads. There is also what appears to be another washer that is part of the stud. It looks like the studs must come out in order to remove the cover. Do I need to cut the washers off? Edited by chevyjoe1972, Aug 20 2012, 01:05 PM.

On some of the cars. There are studs I use heat from a BurnzOmatic to loosen up the locktight. Just to you know. Sycnros do not hold a trans in gear. A common problem with our units are worn shift forks or tired and worn out engagement teeth on the slider and gear. |

I have a tranny that will fall out of 5th at times and reverse is noisy. I discovered when I removed the unit that the bolt that holds the reverse idler shaft in place had fallen out. I am still going to tear it down for inspection but I suspect that this is the main problem since reverse and fifth use the same shift rail. |
