Cam swap issues

Putting XFi cam into base engine, with 60A - 80C cam sprocket.

Lining up with either notch yields different problems.

at 80c distributor rotor points straight up, engine starts but only with WOT and will only go up to about 1000 rpm.

at 60a notch rotor points to about 1:30 won't start at all.

Did I put the cam in upside down? I've tried flipping the rotor with no success. Tried flipping the cam but couldn't get it in without a lot of lifter pressure.

EDIT: The cam sprockets are different styles, but the same size same tooth count. Different tooth style. Old was square, new is round.

You have to match the cam sprocket with the crank sprocket and belt. If your engine came with the square tooth sprocket that's what you should use along with a new belt. There's only one mark to use to line up that way.

That was my guess after I did some reading and checked.

Shame because my old sprocket was boring looking.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions 91. On a side note, any detailed pictures of your avatar?

Got 70 MPG?

T3ragtop and 91 ragtop are two different members.

If you use the second timing mark on the cam, you'll need to loosen the cam sprocket bolt and put the cam dowel in the second notch instead. That's probably your issue.

So I just put my old cam back in for the meantime.

I'm having a heck of a time getting everything squared up with the timing correct.

Checked the #1 lobes and they're equidistant from the lifters while the rotor points straight up, the timing is lined up, and the #1 cylinder is TDC, but it barely starts, and when it does there is now a ton of lifter noise. and either a giant amount of rpm about 2500 or zero power at around 800.
