Ok bear with me while I try and explain what I am trying to accomplish. For those who don’t know, I run a 96 Geo metro at the Bonneville Speedway here in Utah, still utilizing the Metro transmission. Here is my website: http://www.bandbracingteam.webs.com/ Last year I ran 135 MPH and for 2013 we are running a new engine that will be producing twice the torque and substantially more HP. The issue I have is shifting from 3rd to 4th gear, it’s a really wide spread, and the RPM’S really drop and the engine does not re-cover no matter how fast I shift. I checked the gear ratio on the transmission and I have 3:52 gears, and I have a friend of mine who is a machinist and can swap gears in the transmission. Here are some questions that I have: I have been told that the first gen 4dr hatch back metro’s from 88-94 have a shorter distance between gears than the 2dr metros, of both the 1st and 2nd Gen, is this true? Also, on the XFI metro’s do they have a shorter distance between gears than the standard metro transmissions? Is there other years/models of transmissions that would work better that we can get gears from to machine to fit? TIA Clay |

Gear ratios for 1989-1994 US Swift/Metro 5-speed: 1st = 3.416 (3.583 1998+ 1298cc) 2nd = 1.894 3rd = 1.280 4th = 0.914 5th = 0.757 Do a search for gear ratios there are 20 pages to go thur. Edited by MR Bill, Aug 22 2012, 03:51 PM.

What does that two-stroke like for max RPM? at 135mph, with current gearing, what RPM is it turning through the traps? |

Hey Clay. Since you are doubling HP. Why make more than one change? Your new engine it going to pull harder. Should make the difference between gears. If not, try the 3.79s. Are you able to get into 5th gear? If you go to the 3.79s. I have a set that is ready to go. Just pay the shipping and I will fix you up with my spare. PM me and let me know. I won't be on the salt this year. |

All gears the same in North America. Outside NA, there were two different versions, either 123 were different or 4 and 5 were different, but those trannies were never sold here. |

Posted by Dattman over on TeamSwift: There are only 2 gearsets produced by Suzuki for 1.3 fwd swifts. 3.4/1.894/1.280/0.914/0.757 and 3.4/1.894/1.375/1.030/0.870 Most swifts use the first gearset including most North American gti's. RHD drive market Gti's and Euro Gti's have the closer ratio gearset. All Gti's regardless of gearset use a 4.1 final drive and stronger diff. Yes the mk1's have the same ratio's as mk2/3 even though they are completely different. Suzukird have lots more ratio's listed if you have more money than sense  Edited by Woodie, Aug 24 2012, 04:42 AM.

Metromizer, The old engine top RPM was 8500, when I went to 4th it dropped down to 6200 RPM. I could get it back up to about 6400-6600 RPM, it just would not re-cover I hope that answered your question Thanks Clay |

Hi Murf, Sorry to hear you are not going to WOS this year. To answer your question, the car is actually going through many changes, both cosmetically and asthetically. I have to update the roll cage in it for SCTA rules, also in the engine compartment I have smoothed the firewall, routed all wiring through the frame rails, the list goes on and on. Body wise, I am looking at streamlining some parts of the car. We spoke with my engine builder, and we are going to be switching classes, ultimatley what we are doing is planning to go real fast about 160 MPH. When we do this, when all is said and done we could hold 9 records. What I am going to do is while the transmission is out, build a transmission (Gearset), that will match up with the engine/car, then get the record. No, I was never able to get it to go into 5th gear. Talk to you later Clay |
