Hi Forum Members,

I have a 96 G13 that I rebuilt the top and bottom based on the advice here at the forum. After putting it back together it will not fully run. It turns over but when I release the key it dies. I have checked the timing belt setup several times and I believe it is correct. Given I am a newbie I don't know what to check next. This is my first Metro and first rebuild. I can provide any additional info/pics necessary. Appreciate any assistance getting my Blue Beast running. THANKS

Got 70 MPG?

Do you have the grounding cable cleaned and attached to the back of the intake manifold?

Align the timing marks and snap a picture. Take a picture of the spark plug wire routing.

It's good to check the basics, do you have spark, is it getting gas (add a little to the intake to see if it wants to start), do you have compression (should be good after a rebuild) and is your timing ok.

It sounds like your timing may be off by your description (kind of runs with key held in start, but dies after key released). Double check your timing:
1. Cylinder #1 at top dead center (piston observed at top through sppark plug hole) at compression stroke.
2. Veryify compression stroke by making sure piston is at top dead center when rotor is pointed to cylinder #1 terminal.
3. Adjust timing to comply with above by removing timing belt from cam sproket, turning cam with wrench or socket, reattach timing belt.

It can look right but be off a tooth. Rotate cam by hand(wrench) through one cycle untill #1 top dead center on compression stroke comes around again and is still correct.

Sometimes I really do goofy stuff like 'forget to put the rotor back in the distributer'. :banghead

Thanks for the comments.. Starscream the ground wires are clean and attached. Blue Rhino I can't get a picture of the timing marks without removing the engine from the car; but based on the FSM and the info here on the forum I am confident the marks are set correctly. Here is a pic of the spark wires Posted Image Although the wires are twisted they are connected correctly based on the markings I made prior to disassembling the engine. Crankcase, I will check the compression. Removing and reattaching the timing belt is a real ordeal; I've done it twice and it's really a PIA :banghead . I will check the position of the #1 piston and adjust as necessary. Busteriver, because I sometimes forget the little things too, I go slow to avoid those head bangers.

I will recheck everything based on your input. THANKS SO MUCH. I am sure that I will get it right with your help.

Couldnt make out the wires on the cap to see if it was wired right. Make sure all electrical plugs are plugged up that go to the distributor. Give it the once over all over the engine and check all electrical connectors and wires and make sure you didnt leave something unplugged.

Blue Rhino here are some better pictures of the distributor and the spark plug wires as they are set up on my G13. Does this look correct? http://db.tt/22IEPRSM, http://db.tt/CyRrK8II, http://db.tt/Fu39D2Xk, http://db.tt/ZwnuRT6T

Thanks for your input.

Looks like you marked a 1 on the cap. Just make sure the number one wire is there and going counterclockwise on the distributor cap is as follows 1-4-3-2. Engine cylinders being marked as 1 being at the timing belt end of the engine and rest as follows, 1234 towards the right.

It's tough to tell from the straight-on shot, but it looks like your #3 and #4 plug aren't in the right spots on the dizzy.

Thanks for the feedback guys, but it looks like I have bigger problems with this rebuild. I am getting 0 {zero} compression on #3 and #4, with only 90 on #1 and #2 :banghead WTF . Looks like I am going to get more practice tearing this Beast apart :spaz

Before you go that route, is it possible that you mis assembled somthing keeping your valves open?

Scoobs, when I put the new valves in I simply replaced them and installed the rocker arms and lash adjusters without a thought to whether the valves were open or closed when I attached the head and reassembled the engine. What do I need to do?
