Wonder how your ev would do for me, my trip 80 mile round daily, no need for heater or AC. But the summers, would electric parts survive 125°? I know car battery's die in a year maybe 2 if your lucky. But would bigger battery's do better? To bad shopping centers or large parking lots do not have huge solar "shades" you can park under shady car and a slow steady charge for the time you shop/dine/work. I've thought that would be a good idea but maybe not because it's not done already.

Should have just bought a jet pack :shit

But seriously. Very nice, well done. I read it all. As far as EVs go, they run on coal effectively. Which is still poluting the world and I haven't heard anything nice about the batteries when they get disposed. Also, when factoring in the cost of converting, how long does it take for this to become cost effective?

In a perfect world I'd say we should all drive EVs and run on Nuclear power instead of coal. B-)

What will you do with the nuclear waste? :O

:rocker I wouldn't drive an ev to save the world. I'd drive one because electric motors can be brutal powerful. What would be more fun than a AWD Subaru with 1000 hp or a geo with 400. I am all for electric. Brushless lithium whatever, still be sweet.

EV and AWD is very similar. It gives you a lot of INSTANT power. But you still get more top end with the traditional set ups.

And on the nuclear waste. What nuclear waste? B-) I'm talking nuclear fusion, not that ancient nuclear fission the hippies are all worried about.

Just to add more onto this topic. Everyone likes to think of Atmoic bombs and that Russian screw up. But nuclear power has come a long way since WWII. While fusion isn't entirely understood or even functional, it is the most efficient energy source possible. The idea is pretty simple, but harnessing the power hasn't been worked out yet. Everyone should look into it some time. I was watching a special with Morgan Freeman the other day and he was explaining something, I forgot the name of it. But basically the proton accelerator in Europe was combining particles together and something strange happened. The two joined and gained a mass much larger than the sum of it's parts. So 1+1=15. Something like that will be the key to endless, nearly free, energy in the future if the bright minds of today aren't bought out.

Which, entirely off topic, is why I'm going to school to be a nuclear engineer.

I took it out for a longer run today, 50 miles. I will charge it all the way up tomorrow, and see if I can make the 57 miles that I project the range to be. I have been testing at around 55 mph on the freeway, but once I have all of my data collected and the computer dialed in, I will get back to my 75 mph speeds that I prefer. It feels kinda weird being the prick doing 55 on the freeway.

If your 80 mile round trip was for your job and you had a place to charge at work, this metro with this pack would be the ideal setup. Although I have a scond pack on its way to make this rig go 100 miles+ for its range, the way it is now is perfect for a 40 mile commute each way with a charge while you are at work. As for cost of electricity, you would average 5 miles per kilowatt. Electricity varies in price for various regions, but averages about 15 cents per kilowatt. You just have to look at your electric bill to see how much you pay per kilowatt. 40 miles would be 8 kilowatts, so $1.12 each way. If you enjoy the 240 horsepower too much, you may spend a little more.

I do not build EVs to save the world either. I like the cost of electricity vs gasoline, and I like fast Metros. CA has smog regulations that get in the way of hot rodding cars newer than 1974, but EVs are exempt. I always dread going for smog tests and shelling out 50 bucks everytime. I don't mind doing oil changes that much, but I won't miss all the oil pans sitting around the garage till I get around to recycling them...

I've heard of a few cars out there that are E and they burn up in AZ. Would the metro E be less likely to burn up in the mega heat of AZ? It get super hot at your place?

I lived in Tucson for awhile, and the temperatures were not much different than they are here in Sacramento. What the I 10 and I 8 parts of AZ lack is trees and shade. I would imagine that the direct sun light and the heat would make things worse. The most critical problem that I can see would be charging in those conditions. You would probahly need to wire in some forced air ventilation to the charging circuit.to safely charge them in extreme heat, and you would want to look for shade as well. The evenings are a no brainer, since most power companies offer better off peek rates anyway.

Yes, Sacramento gets very hot during the summer. Try it with a van load of inmates, polyester and Kevlar!! I like your results!

Still putting the inside together even though I have been driving it a lot. Here is the center console looking pretty nasty...

This plastic seems to come back to life around 1200 degrees.

Not perfect by any means, but it sure looks nicer than it did. Maybe I will give it one more going over tomorrow.

I really wanted to leave more of the hoakey parts behind on this rig as a reminder of its past, but I had to get rid of the passenger side engine mount. Here is a pic of what they used in the original conversion for the mount.

Posted Image

Yea, that is a piece of wood that worked as a spacer

Posted Image

The new mount is cut out of this 1/4" steel plate

Posted Image

and welded to a DOM sleeve. There is a local 4x4 place that sells these DOM sleeves and bushings as a kit.

Here is the mount

and here it is with the DOM sleeve and bushings.

Posted Image

I am sure glad this engine compartment is done in rattle can primer

Posted Image

Here is a bottom view. I sure wish that the person who did the original conversion had left the original frame mounted bracket on there. These DOM sleeves fit right into the factory mount.
