Got 70 MPG?

Would that not be hard on the transmission at all? |

It is probably not good for the tranny or the motor, although it feels like it is meant to be. I played with it today, and it seems to make sense to start in second, and the the next shift straight to fourth. When I go through all five gears, it reaches the top of the rpm range in each gear almost instantly. Skipping a gear or two allows my torque smile to last longer. |

I am probably going to get a set of 15 x 185 x 60. That 4.4 tranny will have to go too... |

I am really thinking about lithium for this ride. I just fired up my other electric metro, and their was a pretty big difference in how that 480 lbs of lithium felt compared to the 1600 lbs of lead in this ride. It may be fun to cut back on range a little and see how a 250 pound pack performs. |

480 pounds of lithium batteries is a bunch of power. i think that it'd be bad assed to use a japanese domestic market cv transmission with electric drive. just open the throttle and go - zoom! |

480 pounds gives me 21 kwh. Pretty cheep 100 miles if you do the math. That metro feels pretty peppy... this one does too, but I can sure feel the thousand pounds difference. |

100 mile range would be perfect for my commute of 25 miles a day. the only thing i can't do is get through a winter without a blazing heater, not so much for my comfort but to keep the windshield de-iced. |

That is indeed another benefit of an ev. No more waiting for the engine to warm up, instant heat instead. This metro only runs a 1500 watt heater element, but my other one (tevie1 thread) runs two 1500 watt elements. Nothing like 3000 watts of heat right now. |

with the right motor you can ditch the tranny all together though this is pretty difficult with a FWD. |

Finding the "right" motor seems to be as clear as how to manage lithium batteries including setting the cut off for the charge and empty voltage.Ive heard the "right" motor for an ev was an ac one for direct drive. |

It is still difficult to ditch the tranny. I can start in 4th or 5th gear, but it uses way too much energy. As much as I would like to just put a double ended motor in the engine bay with a cv axle going to each wheel, there would not be enough rpm. At 60mph, 13x170x70 geo tire only makes 840 rpms. At a minimum, a differential with a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio would be needed to optimize the torque range of the motor. What I keep my eyes on is series/ parallel shifting. Increased voltage = increased rpm. Run motor fields in parallel for lower speed and more torque, the touch a button to flip from parallel to series and go to much higher rpm mode. |

I think many people who talk about evs never drove one. Granted any electric motor can make 100% if not 400% their rated power at 0 rpm there is a sweet spot where they run the best based on the relationship of the magnets and brushes or what other internal parts that make it up, dc vs 3 phase. 2nd, everyone assums a tranny or any gear reduction sucks 10-15% of the output. I drove an electric geo and I drove it like my gas one. I used all 4 gears and used the throttle to maintain speed vs switching between petals to go from gas to brake. In other words, I engien braked it like I did the non electric one. The performance was as expected, you could "lug" the electric motor in the higher gears, it accelerated faster in lower gears and used less amps. WTF
