Wow, even I can see a difference. They look like entirely different colors. I can see where that would be a problem. |

Neither the new color or the original color get me too excited, but the new color should look pretty slick when the whole thing is done with the shades varying with different viewing angles. I have a hunch it is going to grow on me. |

The bumpers were both raw plastic, were beat up and scraped, and came from Pick n Pull. Since body filler does not stick to the plastic bumpers, I shot a coat of primer on to make the base for my filler. You can see in this pic that primer does not fix the problems. ![]() Next, the flaws are filled, and the primer is all blocked down. You can see everywhere that I sanded through to the black the old texture of the plastic bumper shows as tiny black dots. Not to worry, the next coat of primer will cover all this. ![]() Two bumpers ready for round two of the primer. ![]() Those deep scratches are gone ![]() Two bumpers in final primer stage. As soon as they dry, I can final block them for paint.

Old Fart w/Wrenches

What does this phrase refer to? What are the variables that make this so "technical"?

Davegran, the technical challenge of painting the car in pieces is that the panels may not match, then the car looks like a checker board. Some colors are really easy to butt match, but others like this one are more challenging. The benefit of painting in pieces is that there is no evidence of the car being repainted. When you paint a car all in one piece, you have to mask the door jambs which results in a tape line all the way around each door opening. If you paint the car in pieces, you can open up any door and see the paint from the exterior surface transition smoothly into the door jamb. One of the spots that really bugs me is the hatch area. When the hatch is opened up, you can see the quarter panel paint transition into the hatch jamb, and you can see the paint from the roof transition as well. You can see in the pic below that area where the rubber bump stop for the hatch contacts the chassis. If you do a metro right, it is sweet to see the paint all perfect from the quarter panel into this area, and then vertically along the rear glass when you have the hatch open. ![]() I will probably give the piece by piece method a shot, and then if it does not match right, I will have tape lines in these areas like the rest of the world does when I re shoot it with the panels all on the car. |

Metromizer, I was a collision tech at a body shop for a long time, but now I do pretty much anything to any car to make ends meet. Auto glass, air conditioning, exhaust, huge wrecks, little wrecks, wiring, custom fabrication, diagnostic, etc. My primary focus is to develop parts for EV conversions and establish an EV parts business where people can buy my products to easily convert their own cars to electric without having to know a whole lot about converting them.

Here are all the panels for this ride. This is the base coat stage that dries flat. Hopefully it will be ready for clear coat later tonight, otherwise the clear will go on tomorrow. Booth number one: both bumpers, both fenders, hood, tail light filler panels, gas (electric) door ![]() Here is a better view of the hood: ![]() Booth number two: both doors and the rear hatch

Other than saving the trees that you paint under and the environment, the booths just keep more dirt out of the finish. Even in these booths, I always have a couple of goodies to polish out. This time of year, a warmer environment is also needed if you like the clear coat to settle out with the glassy look. I have painted with out booths before, it just takes more work to polish it out. |
