Hi there, just read a post about opening the passenger door, but didn't quite understand how to transfer that info to my little 91 metro with a missing lock button and a locked door. Bought it a couple weeks ago and just took the door trim off, partially. Took out the electric "gizmo" but don't have a voltmeter to see whether it is ok. Sounds like there's a way to unlock the door without replacing the gizmo/locking mechanism widget. Am I reading that right? I have no background working on cars btw and no vocabulary either, obviously : ) But this little car is so cute and so good on fuel looks like I'll be getting myself a repair manual. Thanks for this cool forum. |

The only key that came with the car doesn't work in that door, or the hatch for that matter, but I don't need to let people in through there. Driver door is unlocked - permanently. I actually locked myself out the first time I (ever so cleverly : ) ) figured out how to lock my door, and had to break in, which is rather easy when the lock button is in place. Obviously it's missing from my passenger door. Any other ideas? |

You can remove the inner door handle and once the handle is removed take a pair of needle nose vise grips and latch on to the lock rod and pull it forward to unlock the door. One bolt should hold the inner handle in. Remove the trim to see how to get to the bolt. You will need this information to remove the trim if this is the style handle you have, http://geometroforum.com/topic/3599054/1/ Heres the rods behind the handle, one to lock and one to operate the latch to open the door. The picture here has the inside door panel off. Its not necessary just to remove the door handle. Handle can be removed without taking anything else off the door.

Actually, thinking about what I did a couple days ago, I did have the door handle thingy dangling out. That's how I reached in and looked around before pulling part of the trim back and cutting the wires to the "gizmo." I'll take pictures of that thing tomorrow. Anyway, I pushed and pulled on all the stuff, the metal "stuff," which you call rods, with no results, then I noticed the electric widget one of them was connected to and thought it might be the problem, so I took it out. G! reading this back to myself is rather humbling. I have no idea what I'm doing, but there I went. I am expecting a haynes manual by next week. Hopefully the thing is full of diagrams and pictures : ) Meanwhile I so very much appreciate your help. |

Oh No!! you should have asked here first.. Hayles is full of misinformation. O; well already done. ASAP go to Ebay and get a factory service manual. here is one I just looked up - specifically a 1991 factory service manual for $28 + shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-91-Geo-Metro-Factory-Service-Repair-Manual-ST370-91EDM-/200711060845?hash=item2ebb4fbd6d&item=200711060845&pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&vxp=mtr |

for the Blue Rhino. That sounds like the right track. But, for some reason I remember the sayng "front rod move towards the front, rear rod move towards the rear". But also, I wouldn't bet aginst the Rhino. One rod opens and closes the lock, the other rod opens the door. You may need to take the plastic part off shown in the picture for things to move more freely. Keep in mind there will be some resistance to over come with rod, but not a huge amount. |

Disconnect the rods from the handle. The lock rod should move back and forth in two positions. Thinking about the position the locking tab works on the handle assembly, I think crankcase is right. The lock tab should push in towards the latch to unlock and the latch handle towards the front of the car to open the door once it is unlocked. |

Wow! Ok, thanks so much guys. Now I'm thoroughly convinced I should run my ideas by you *before* acting on them. I'll take my camera with me just to show you how much I appreciate you : ) I'm hoping for a shot of a wide open passenger door... |

It's OPEN! Blue Rhino was right: just took a little ooommph to move the rod enough to unlock. Got it to unlock by using the other end, where the electric widget used to connect and pushed toward the windshield. Here's the set-up in that door, including the electric "gizmo," and where it used to live. Finally, the whole gizmo: .....(what is this thing??) |

If you pull the lock out it will have the code stamped on it to get a new key made. |

Thanks Mr. Bill. I might get around to that later. There's a few other things to spend money on first. Made my first trip to the pick'npull today and wasn't all that lucky but got a couple little things -- literally, like one of the two thingies that drop the back seat down. It's quite a change from working on my bicycle! |
