Swapping Hatch Question; Can you swap a stock 91 Hatch with a rear defrost Hatch?

When I was at pick and pull today I noticed the 91 AT Metro that was there had a Hatch with a Rear Defrost. My 91 metro does not have one and I was wondering If it was possible to swap out the hatches and run wires to make it work. How difficult would that be and could I even make it work where there isnt a rear defrost button on my metro's dash.

Thoughts?

You should have all the wiring already. You'll have a plug behind the dash for the button, and the wiring for the rear defrost should be in the back by the speaker wire.

So pick up the hatch and the defrost button, and it theoretically should be plug and play.

Make sure you tie a lenght of wire to your wires before you pull them out. That way you can tie the wires from the new hatch to the tie wire and pull them back to where the plug into. Also you have to pull the right rear side pannel off to do this.

Did it on my base 91. Wiring and switch were already installed. The gamble is getting a rear defrost from a donor car that works.

Would there be anyway to test that before pulling off a non op geo metro?

I thought I could take a meter and check for conductivity between the leads, but it doesn't tell you if you have a single line that's inop.

Hmm, thats too bad. I'll have to go back and look at it. It looked like the hatch was in good condition but who knows.

A single wire that doesn't work can be easily fixed with a special paint. Once you find out which wire doesn't work you run along it with a voltmeter to find the break if it isn't obvious. Dab a little of the paint on the break and there ya go.

I took a peek at where the rear defroster button goes on my 91 geo and to me it looks like there wasn't any wiring going to it. Would it be hiding somewhere? and if not what would the next step be?

Fish around in there and see if you can find it. If its not in there the next step would be wiring up a circuit from the fuse box.

all I see is the passenger seat belt circuit all the way into the back of the dash where that cut out is....followed by a tiny spider web. Could it have fallen behind there and if so how do I get access to it?
