ok got me a new (94) metro, installed replacement backglass, new fuel filter, doing the tune-up/ check up when pulling out of the driveway the linkage between the ger shift shaft and the gear shift/select shaft on manual trans broke in 2. drained, opened tranny (3 bolts left side) disconnected gear shift shaft, found break. ok here is my million dollar question, can the linkage be removed without a tranny removal? can the trans be split installed to do? or am I just makin more work? now to spend the next couple hours to days lookin fer part/ tranny......

Can you post a pic of the broken part? Are you talking about the hardend steel shaft that runs thru the unit is broken?

Yes that shaft can be changed out in the car. I think its a pain in the backside. If you do change out that shaft. Make sure to install a new shift shaft seal while your doing the work. To remove that shaft. Go to the opposite side of the trans. There will be a odd shaped triangle cover, held down with 3, 10mm bolts. You are going to see a cast iron end, bolted to the shaft. Note how its bolted on. It will only work going one way. Remove the broken part. On top of the trans is a cap cover held down with 4, 10mm bolts. Its going to come off too. Fish the broken end out. Now put it all back together and reseal. If it were me. I would remove the whole trans and go thru it to see why it broke, and what ever little bits it may have left behind that might cause further damage.

Sorry about that. Your pic first has to go to something like photobucket to post it here. Forgot to add that detail. Sorry

That is the castiron piece I was writting about. It is probably not broken. Just rattled loose is all. It will have gotten harder and harder to shift though. Some where laying in the bottom of that unit is a hardend 12 mm bolt that has a shoulder on it. It MUST GET OUT OF THAT UNIT. It may have the starting thread buggerd up. Try to chase the threads on the bolt and shaft. Then see if the bolt will start in the threads. If so, put the cast iron part back on the shaft. It will only work and shift the trans when its installed correctly.

That's the yoke. It comes in 2 pieces. It just came apart.
Put it back in on the shaft and put the bolt in it with loctite to hold it in place.

Edit. Go Mr Murf. Fast typist.

I could see the word yoke. But could not make my fingers type it. I guess the yoke is on me :lol Thanks again Jittney. :thumb

Okay. That is a new one here. What was happening just before it broke? The yoke that goes over that, did you remove it, or had the bolt worked loose by itself?
