I have a 93 geo metro 3/5. Every gear is pretty good in my opinion except for third, it will not down or up shift it just grinds, However if i get on level ground not moving i can take off from from 3 so i dont think the teeth are gone, im in the process of replacing the clutch. Just need to know if i should just get a junk yard trans or have the old one rebuilt. My engine runs strong so its worth the rebuild if i have too, any opinions i will be grateful for. Im new here had my geo for about 3 weeks now was getting around 46mpg without third. Thanks.

Carolina before you do anything, drain the oil you have in there and refill it with some ATF. See if that helps with your shifting. If it does your tranny good just run with that oil for a week and then replace it with synthetic. |

Bit late for that, got the trans out already clutch was bout done anyway. I did change the fluid right after i got it, to 30w to see if anything changed but no luck. There were no chunks but the oil was dirty.

Nice try anyway. ATF is a little thinner and a better cleaner. If you need it quick then the junkyard is your best bet. |

Yea thanks rollinstone, not in a hurry though. They have 3 at the local junkyard right now all 95+ two with 3/5 one with the 4/5. somebody got happy with a can of silver paint to dress up the engine on one of the 3 cylinders so its out. I guess decision now is the four or three cylinder trans? |

Three cylinder trans will have a lower (higher RPM) ratio than what you have now. Gonna spin the engine pretty fast and cost you gas mileage on the highway. You can change to 13" wheels to put it back the way it was. Four cylinder trans will have a taller (lower RPM) ratio than what you have now. If your engine is in good shape you'll probably like the increased mileage and reduced engine wear and noise. Either way, the speedometer drive gear needs to stay with the wheels that are on the car. If you keep your 12" wheels, you should keep your current speedo drive. The speedo drives in either of the junkyard transmissions will be for 13" wheels. Also either way, your transmission will like Pennsoil Synchromesh best. |

Sorry about the slow response, when i got it it already had the 13s with 155/80 tires on it, pretty new ones at that. But What would you say would be best for small city mpg? I will rarely be going over 50mph within a 15 mile radius. I know the four cyl trans would be ideal for the hiway, But what about stoplight to stoplight hangin with traffic?

Its not the gear teeth that are worn. Its the syncro in third. Our units are known for wearing out the brass. Normally its the one in second gear. |
