Just a month ago I rebuilt my transmission on my 1990 Geo Metro. It was not downshifting into second or first, so the syncros were obviously worn out. Now, after the rebuild, when I'm driving, Upshifting and downshifting into second it grinds. It goes in smoothly but if I'm accelerating a little fast to normal speed it will grind at the end of the gear's engagement. It seems to me like the clutch is not slowing the motor down enough and when I shift into second the gears are spinning still, but it only does it to second not 1st, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. I'm kinda confused on the issue, do I need a new clutch or what? Thanks for the help! |

No I am not using syncromesh. I've read a lot of threads saying to use it, but why? Is it different from regular gear oil? |

Use Syncromesh or synthetic ATF, smooth as butter |

It's thinner and contains additives that are better for the long term health of the synchros. Regular gear oil (75-90w) is too thick and transmissions suffer for it. Somewhere out there is a Factory service Bulletin detailing the change in recommendation and the reason for it. Good Luck! |

What they said. Works much better, especially in the winter. |

So it's not likely to be the clutch? |

If you can locate this bulletin, I would sure like to see it. Keep me in mind if you run across it. |

The clutch doesn't function that way. The synchros will speed up or down the RPM of the clutch disc as you go into gears, not the other way around. |
