I've got exactly the same problem as this post, but with a different Metro: my '96 Sedan driver's side door won't open from the inside. I read about the rag trick; I removed the door panel, hoping it was just a slipped activator rod. No such luck: the rod moves some little lever in the latch, but the door won't open. Question the first: Do I have to replace the latching mechanism? Question the second: What latching mechanism can I swap from another car? I've checked the interchangeable parts. It doesn't mention any of the door hardware. Is it the same on passenger and driver side? Will the latch from a 2-door work in a 4-door? What about different years? Suzuki Swifts? Thanks in advance for any help. |

I haven't had to solve for this issue yet but did notice there is apparently a difference between driver and passenger side latches (they are listed separately here) http://www.suzukicarparts.com/parts/1996/SUZUKI/SWIFT/GA/?siteid=214820&vehicleid=1272079§ion=BODY%20HARDWARE&group=DOOR&subgroup=LOCK%20%26%20HARDWARE&component=&searchText=&startRow=11&maxRow=10 I'd guess you could get a replacement from a 95-01 sedan and you would be good to go. That is however a guess, a trip to your local pick-n-pull is likely in order. Good Luck. |

Thanks, idmetro. I noticed while goofing with it yesterday that the passenger and driver sides are mirrored, and so not interchangeable. I also found that the front and rear are different, thus destroying my awesome idea to exchange a driver problem for a seldom-used passenger problem. I'm planning on a scrapyard run this weekend. I wonder whether they'll still have these cars. I'll find out soon. |

Pulled the latch (lock, whatever) out, and discovered that it's broken. There's this lever that gets pushed down by the outside handle, and pulled up by the inside handle. The inside-handle end has broken off. I went to the junkyard and pulled one out of a '96 2-door. It looked like it would fit my sedan, so for $20 I figured I could experiment. The two latches look *exactly* alike, but the outside-handle activator rods are differently shaped. I'm working on a way to pull them off their rivets without messing anything up. It will involve a Dremel, pliers, brute force, and pictures. |
