I have a 1999 metro 3 cylinder 5 speed all Original. when I first bought the car the 5th gear wouldn't go in. then about 3 weeks later 5th gear started working but it kinda would slide out but still be in 5th without me needing to hold it in if that makes sense? Anyways today the problem came back it won't go into 5th? My first question is, what could this problem be, a linkage problem? My next question is worst case scenario if I need a different trans would trying to find a 5 speed from a 4 cylinder metro be a better choice? Are they stronger? and would it give me better MPG? Any advice would be appreciated |

I'm no expert in transmissions by any means, but I would guess that the shift fork is wearing on it. It depends on your terrain and what year the transmission would come out of. Trannys from the older generation Swifts (not GTs or GTis) have a 3.52 ratio, which IMO is too much gearing for a 3 cylinder. The newer 4 cylinders have a 3.79 ratio, which is the same as an XFi. |

5th not staying in would be a synchro issue, according to Mr Murf. Not going in at all.....I'd take off the black hat on the end and check the philip screws that hold the retainer plate in place. While you're there, take a couple of pictures and post them. It may be that replacing some parts there will be suffice

Easy to post pictures. 1) Upload photos at imgur.com 2) Copy direct image link. 3) Type: "" (without quotation marks). It would look like this:

No Sycnros do not hold a trans in gear. They only ease it between gears. Edited by Murf 59, Sep 7 2012, 11:48 PM.
