It appears that the shaft on this 5spd I got from the forum took a hit at some point: Note the flattened side on the bushing-holder, and the shaft might have a small bend in it. The stabilizer stud on left also had a small bend, which I straightened with a wrench (evidently not hardened!) Does anyone think this could be a real issue? It does click in/out nicely etc. so it doesn't seem to be binding... I can round out the bushing OK; what about leak or wear? |

The shift shaft will probably leak. It seems that seal is always one of the first to go. They all leak anyway at high mileage if that seal hasn't been replaced. |

I presume that requires splitting the case etc? |

I believe so, but not sure. I had my old landlord rebuild the tranny for me. |

I will have to look at one of my case halves to see if it can come out. Try pushing in on that shaft to see if it will go all the way into gear. It might not move all the way to lock up the slider to the gear. Will check my case in the AM |

I think Jittney took one out and got it back in without splitting the cases. She said don't try it in the car, but it can be done without splitting. |

If it is working anywhere close to proper without binding, and actually going in place correctly It would have to do a hell of a lot of leaking and wearing before i would do anything more than wipe down every once in a while and check the oil in the unit. |

I saw the thread by Jittney; it seemed that the case did have to be split - I'll re-read it. It does slide/click nicely without binding. I agree that unless it leaks bad, I'm not opening it all the way up... I also thought that I could "make a seal" as I've done for other shafts; coat the shaft with thin grease and surround it with RTV. That boot is also shot (4 pieces), and I was going to clean and RTV it in any case. Also considered buying a new boot and making a split at the small end so it fits over the joint - might be nicest. helterskelter said he got it from ndgsxr who'd said it ran OK, so I'd rather not mess. |

I took the boot off; the shaft looks a tad bent -beyond- the normal travel, so it's likely that the rod was all the way in (3rd?) when it was mashed. The boot does come off over the pivot, so a new one should go back on OK, and I can seal that at both ends for good measure. I'll try Jittney's method http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=581877&t=4132264 next and see. |

If you take out the shift selector, too, it makes getting to the bolt on the shaft in back much easier. I just took the shift shaft out of a transmission last week. Granted, it was on the bench, but it was much easier than the previous attempt listed in that post. |
