My wheel likes to shake at random alot. Sometimes at 55 and sometimes closer to 65. It happends in gear and in neutral at highway speeds. Could it be wheel balance? My tires are all less than 3000 miles old |

Could be balance, could be a bad tire, could be something with the car and not the tires. Rotate the tires front to rear and see if the nature of the shake changes. While you've got the car up in the air, poke around, wiggle and shake everything to see if there;'s any play in any of your suspension components. |

the ROOT cause has not been discovered yet, But, in order of what I have done - to chase the Shake - which is generally by the least $ amount, (not Ties) And each of these items was in fact bad/in need of replacing, (all this wear is probably caused by former owner continuing to drive with Shake) And each item slightly increased MPH (& reduced shaking), from 55 to 65+ before shaking, (and assuming aftermarket rims are good – but balancing would even this out anyhow): 1)balance & alignment 2) 4 Tie rods $$$$ 3) 2 front tires 4) 2 Front Strut mounts 5) Rear shocks – Everything else appears good, nothing loose, no rattle, grinding or noise: KYB struts, ball joints, bushings, CV, wheel bearings, Rack n Pinion, etc. My Metro GURU neighbor, ’96 3/5 380K, has talked me into CV shafts, basically the 2 drive shafts for front wheel drive, parts about $60 to $100 each. GURU’s theory is because shaking is intermittent, and the 2 CVs are the only Moving Parts, CVs are Un-balanced/warped, and therefore the pair will sometimes be In-Sync = no shake, & sometimes Out-of-Sync = shaking. So what the heck, my Mechanic is looking around for good price on quality product, so no rush - I just find someone in the slow lane and tag behind them at 65mph. I have a new motto now, “hey, I’m NOT driving slow; it’s the guy ahead of me!” |

The speedbuggy has a slight vibration once I hit 56mph and goes away at about 62mph. I think it might be a tire out of balance. Have not checked it yet but it will be soon. You all will get a laugh out of this one... Since I bought the car I have had this funny whistling noise that has slowly gotten worse. I was coming home this morning from work and noticed that when I turned the wheel slightly to the right while driving it would get louder, and when the wheel was turned back to the left (dont want to drive into the ditch) it all but went away. My first thought was maybe a wheel bearing or even a warped rotor or worse a cv joint. So I figured lets try something stupid first...I stopped and pulled the hub caps off of the drivers side and took off...MAGIC fix, no whistling anymore. Has to be one of the silliest things I have seen in a while. Have a good laugh at my expense Metroheads. I'm still shaking my head. I love this S&^T ! DBG USN (ret) |

When I first got my '90, the wheels shook a lot. I took it in for tire balance. The guy balanced my tires and told me the wheels were bent. The car shook after the tire balance. Once I replaced the wheels, no more shake. I got my replacement wheels at Pick-n-Pull. I turned the wheels on the donor car to see if they were straight. Have the tire balance guy check to see if your wheels are bent. |

Those are exactly the same words I would write for my 92', except no tire shop ever said they were bent but I could see it. Not bad, but definitely had some runout. Gotta love those rear drum brakes on metros - very low friction. I'd dismount a tire from the wheel myself then put in on the rear of metro and give it a spin and buy the rims that were true. |
