Bad gas....bad timing?

I have been screwing around trying to get this 1.0 to run right again since the rebuild. Now it's got a horrible pinging under load and I can't seem to get the timing "backed off" enough to keep a happy medium. Car lumbers to get up to speed now but once I get up to around 60 she purrs right along. Could it just be that I have bad gas? Head was shaved .030, that wouldn't effect it and the octane required would it? :banghead

Distributor should be in the center of the slot for factory timing. Sounds as if you've got the timing belt one tooth advanced.

So looking at the cam gear from the pass side do I need to go one tooth clockwise or ccw? And assuming that by one tooth you mean I just simply need to make a mark on the belt and then move it one tooth either way?

Turn the camshaft sprocket one tooth CCW to retard it. Make sure if you mark the timing belt to identify where it is that you also mark the crankshaft so you know it hasn't moved down there.
