Background: I've already adjusted the valves with the head off of the engine. The car was not running when I got it. I adjusted them with what I thought would have been #1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke. Cam lobes were nowhere near the rockers:![]() But doing that puts the cam gear in this position: ![]() The PO had marked one of the cam marks with orange paint, and it looks right to me. When this mark is at the top, the pin on the camshaft is at the bottom: ![]() However, in that position, the cam lobes are touching rockers, making valve adjustment difficult. I actually cannot back off the intake rocker enough to fit a .005 gauge between: ![]() Sooooo, help? I'm a bit confused. Is my valve adjustment still good? What is the proper way to install the cam gear? |

Just curious, by the picture it looks like there are two dowl holes for the cam. If so, are you sure the cam is in the right one for your mark? |

It won't. Different application. Use the one marked E Your valve lash has nothing to do with the orientation of the camshaft at TDC/#1. If you set it with the max lift of the lobe 180 degrees from the rocker, then it will be correct. |

Awesome. That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I thought I had done it right, but being my first time, I was second-guessing myself. It's nice to have confirmation. |

G13BB is supposed to be timed using #4 at TDC, not #1 as in 99% of engines. Maybe that is the problem. The timing mark is the one directly opposite the locating pin. As far as adjusting the valves goes, as 3Tech said, it doesn't really matter, just as long as they are on the low spot. |
