I hope someone out there can help. First off I love my metro and will drive it till it or I die!

Anyway I cannot get my 1991 Geo metro to idle and it is very difficult to start. Most days I end up push starting it because the starter doesn't do the trick. Once it is running it does fine but it refuses to idle. Once its warm it will almost idle but as soon as there is any electrical load on the alternator it dies (i.e. lights or heater blower). I replaced the plugs, rotor, cap, wires, ECT sensor, O2 sensor, air filter, and alternator (two years back). Any body have any idea what it could be?

thanks for your help!

Check throttle cable at engine for adjustment.Have you ajusted the idle? sounds like bad IAC,Idle air control valve.

Worn out? Get a compression test. This is the time of year that all the worn out engines won't start anymore because the temperature is cooler.

i just did a compression test. and sadly it is worn out. It had 60-30-90psi. i then did a wet test and it really didnt change anything. so it must be a valve problem. now im trying to decide if i want to buy a Japanese motor or just buy a new metro. How hard is a valve job? im pretty mechanically inclined and have rebuilt motors before but right now i just have no time to do it. And would a valve job even do much? i mean if i have the head off its not to much more work to put in new rings.

There are rebuilt heads on Ebay for $300 or so, another $200 for gaskets, bolts, etc you could be back in good shape. It's the easiest engine in the world to work on. Your thought on the rings is right on, putting a valve job on an old engine often just pulls oil straight past the rings. Luckily you can pull the pistons out the top and re-ring them with the engine still in the car.
