I know the trannys come with different ratio's I am just wondering if the 4 cylinder trannys are better in design and strength then the 3 cylinder or is it the same tranny and case just different gearing? |

Geo Glenn will say a 4/5 is better, but for fuel efficiency a 3/5 is best. |

Opps I should have been more specific I have a 3 cylinder now I may need a transmission soon. Would a 5 speed from a 4 cylinder be a better choice as far as it being stronger better design I know there is a increase in MPG with different ratio just wondering what the difference is in the tranny? |

I heard the 1.3 box was built better, but not 100% sure. |

I only thought the trannies from a swift GTi were tougher... |

tougher? the gt/ turbo3 transmissions were 4.10:1 ratio with a nominally wider ring gear. the gt transmission case has an additional mounting lug on the bell flange and a cast torque arm bolted to that lug that runs to the front of the engine and is attached by 2 bolts. the bits of the transmission that are like glass are the same among all the transmissions and not one is better than another by anything that matters. i've run 4.39 vert transmissions on gt and turbo3 engines without any troubles. i'm not a hypermiler so i think that the 4.39 and 4.10 gear ratios are proper for the g10. the boxes with longer legs work better on the g13 but i think that they are counter productive on 3 bangers or for effective acceleration on the 4 bangers. |

I would put a 4.1 ratio trans in your 99 3 cylinder car. This is a 9% final drive jump and be sure to use your speedo driven gear so your speedo stays right. The 4.1 trans came in non Xfi 3 cylinder cars from 89-94 and Swift GTs of the same era. |

I love the mountain climbing ability of my 4/5 in 5th gear at 70 MPH. I have a 3.52 final drive transmission. I'm averaging 44 MPG cross country at normal highway speeds on Top Tier fuel. My favorite 50% ethanol blend yields 40 MPG cross country, and 42-43 MPG around town. You get better fuel economy with a 3/5 on slower, more local trips. You'll also be in 3rd gear doing 45 MPH up the Eastern slope of the Rockie Mountains. On road trips, the 3/5 sucks for fuel economy at highway speeds. My foot is buried most of the time to maintain 75 MPH. I'm lucky to get 38 MPG. My 3/5 has a standard camshaft and a 3.79 final drive transmission. I agree with t3ragtop that a 4.39 or 4.10 final drive is a good match for a 3 cylinder engine on 13" tires. |
