Can you guys throw out ideas why I wouldn't have heat. I know generally I would end up doing the core. Any other things may make it not work? My temp sensor is out. So I have it unplugged so my fan will be on.

linkage to the flaps inside the heater box fell off, do you hear the flaps move when you slide the levers back and forth?
Plugged heater core, flush it out.

I can hear the flaps open. Is the core behind the glovebox like most?

You should put some radiator flush in your car and see if that helps. The core is in the middle of the car. I haven't looked recently but you can probably remove a very minimum of air ducting and put your hand on it to see if it is warm.

Id imagine its clogged. I had to put a new radiator in when I bought it cuz it was so packed full of stop leak :shake anyone got a pic or schematic of where it is exactly?

Where does your temp gauge show once the car is warmed up? A stuck open thermostat can cause no heat as well. Warm the car up and put your hands on the two heater hoses going into the firewall and see if they are hot to the touch. If you can hold the hoses, something is wrong and the car is not heating up. Also if your cooling fan is running all the time the car may be over cooling and not getting hot enough to produce heat. Put a new sensor back in and wire it correctly where the fan can regulate the operating engine temperature correctly and thus provide the proper coolant temperature to provide you heat. What do you mean, Your temp sensor is out?

Two hoses run to your firewall for the heater core. One going in, one going out. you can take these hoses off from the motor, but leave the on the heater core.

Pour a little baking soda down one hose, followed by vinegar, and hold your hand over the hose. Point the other hose at the ground.

Switch hoses and do this a few times. Nothing would flow through my heater core when I started. After about ten minutes I had a strong stream coming out.

Stop Leak? :O :shake
Stop now. No use in going any further. Save your self some :banghead and replace the heater core. It is in the exact center of the dash. ^o)

Removing the dash is like an hour job.

Front speakers
Four bolts on each door panel
Three bolts on top of dash
Three or so on the bottom of the dash
Ashtray
Glove box door
Radio(has a bolt in the back you should to get through the glovebox)
Heater controls
Steering wheel trim
Steering wheel itself(careful if you have airbag, leave your battery unplugged for a long time in advance)
Instrument cluster

The only trouble spots I had was the radio and steering wheel. The instrument cluster is easy if you loosen the speedometer cable from the transmission first.

And bag and label every bolt you pull off. Bag labeled speakers for the speakers, radio for the radio, ashtray, door driver side, ect ect. Saves a ton of hassle when putting it back together.

Thanks guys. My temp gauge does not work on the dash. So I don't know how hot it gets. My temp sensor by the thermostat is bad because it would never kick my fan on. I noticed this when I changed the radiator. So I just just unplugged the sensor so the fan is always on. I will try the baking soda trick first to avoid a teardown. .

It sounds like your system may be badly clogged. Leak fix kills engines.

Shinrin has some good advice, :thumb however its for the earlier models. The good news is that it is even less work to pull a 1996 dash. ^o)
Take a look at my thread below to see how much stuff you do NOT have to pull to get the dash off. PM me if you have any questions. If I were you, I would try to find a '98+ model and pull the dash to replace yours and do it all at one time. ^o)

IIRC there is some threads on here about heater core replacement without pulling the dash, but I can tell you it is MUCH easier to go ahead and get the dash out of the way. After doing one, I could pull a dash to about 30 min. ;)

Good luck on the baking soda. :whistle

Your fan may have never come on because of a stuck open thermostat. Replace the thermostat and then see if the heater works as well as the fan comes on after you put the sensor back in. The stuck thermostat may very well be why the temp gauge is not working as well.
