When I'm stopped at a spotlight sometimes its hard to get into first gear. Seems to get worse when I have been driving a bunch. It also seems to do it occasionally on start up. Its also hard to get in revers sometimes but not always. I'm not sure how old the clutch is. Just recently put in fresh syncromesh. Any Ideas? Could it be the clutch going out?

Start with adjusting the clutch. There is a cable and adjusting nut on top of the transmission, on the driver's side. Tightening the nut will increase the disengagement distance, should make it easier to get into first, and less likely to grind or feel 'notchy' shifting into the others. Start with one full turn, and see if the problem improves. |

while pushing in the clutch and trying to get into gear let off the brake and try and nudge the car forward by shifting your weight, it should slide right in. if that doesn't work slowly let off the clutch while trying to get it to go into gear and it should click in right as the clutch starts to engage. all of my manual cars have had this problem. |

My Metro has 1st and 2nd synchro problems. I usually let the clutch pedal up about 1/2" and push it back down again while shifting into first. It seems to get everything in the transmission spinning just a few RPMs |

For worn synchro in first, come to a stop at stop sign and let up on the clutch while in nuetral. Push it back down and it will go right into first. |

Clutch adjustment first. R is the hardest gear to get into. So clutch problems show up there first. You might have a unit though with a worn sycn in first gear. There should be about 1/16" - 1/8" free play between the adjusting nut and the arm |

My 352 was difficult going into first, but I changed my fluid to ATF and now it goes in almost normally...........also noticed that if the car is still moving it makes it easier to approach first. I was gonna pull it and repair it but now it seems to be functional enough to use. 3tech has alot to say about ATF in these units. |
