1991 vert starting problems and odd noise

Hello all, I have been reading posts for months and I can't stop reading all of the information! I used to own a 1993 auto and I have recently bought a 1991 auto vert for my wife. I installed a new top on it and I am trying to fix the mechanical issues now. I have been trying to post for a while, but i just figured it out!

First thing in the morning when you try to start it, it cranks and starts for a second and dies, you crank it a second time and it runs a couple seconds, and then it usually starts the third try. So first question is what could be causing this?

Second problem is, when accelerating, it sounds like a belt is slapping. My mechanic used a stethiscope and thought it was the timing belt. So i think that I will go ahead and get a timing belt and the crank and camshaft seals that I need, however I have never done more than changing a radiator on my 2000 eclipse. So i guess my question is, what else could be causing this rattling other than a belt? or do i need to take off the cover and assess from there?

Thank you all so much for all the help I have already got from just reading! Have a great day!

Welcome to the party! :cheers

If you can replace a radiator, on a 2000 Eclipse, you should be able to do a Metro full build, with one hand, drinking a pop, while texting your friends. :type

All exaggeration a side, a compression check is always a good idea to get a general glimpse of the engines health. :news

Replacing the timing belt, tensioner, & seals is a great plan. ^o) Also a Full tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, & rotor. :gamerz Betcha it starts better. :hiding

Then run some Sea Foam, Techron, or what ever your poison is for fuel injector cleaner, and see how it does. :drivin

For your starting problem put a fuel pressure gauge on it and check the fuel pressure.

Ha I hope so! And I was just looking at buying a compression tester. I am only 21 and have like no tools except a 10 piece socket set.

I did replace the plugs and wires when I got the car and a pcv valve. But I didnt get cap or rotor? I have never done that so I guess I will add that to the list along with cleaning the egr valve which I am thinking might have something to do with the problem.

And I have never sea foamed a car but I will give it a try!

Thank you so much for your help.. does anyone have any idea why it wouldnt start up on the first try? fuel filter maybe?

Edit: Alright I will give that fuel test a try! You guys are awesome!
