working on a 1991 geo metro 1.0 liter automatic car. the issue
is the engine cuts out at about 2800 rpm's acts like it is hitting
a rev limiter. not a fuel issue seems electrical but i have yet to
hunt the problem down.
timing is spot on
new injector
thanks in advance mike

Are you driving it and it cuts off or just idling it at 2800RPM?
It could be a coolant issue whens the last time you changed that?
Spark plugs? and wires? and Distributor cap and Rotor? checked those out?
Your Engine light on?

The other thing I could think of is your Catalytic Converter is bad, drop the two bolts on the exhaust manifold and turn her on, this is going the be a little load but, wont hurt anything. If you dont want to do that yet turn her on let her run and check the tail pipe see how she breathing out! if poorly then its your cat.

One more thing to consider is she could have a Vacuum leak. Check for that.

Check your Gap in your plugs too and Your PCV Valve cant stress that enough these new pcv valves are like crap these days and they go out pretty easy they cost like 3 bucks but check yours if it doesnt rattle when you shake it then replace it!

One more thing to check out is the Fuel Filter! when you push your throttle down you are sending more fuel which means your pump is pumping more gas so you could have a blocked up filter! Reason for that is because if you let her settle down and your able to crank her back up the sentiments have settled down and you can crank her! but when you rem her those sentiments are being sucked back up and causing a clog.

FOG

with no test equipment
to start

a test light (with a bulb not LED) on coil negative
clip on battery
POSITIVE
tape test light to windshield
drive car
repeat the symptom , does the light stop .... blinking .... lighting

if yes
you are loosing spark from the ignitor ...
if no
spark is good
look at fuel
same way

OR
you have the wrong oil in the engine and the lifters are floating open at high engine rpm
oil pressure goes high
what oil are you using ?

Got boost?

This is t3ragtop's post regarding a bad ecu. This is for a 4cyl so idk if its the same on a 3cyl.
This might give you something to go on:
Quote:

if the ecu is bad you will have very specific cel conditions as listed in the fsm troubleshooting flow chart.

key on, dark cel. you are correct about having the battery disconnected to unplug or plug in the ecu connectors.

the ecu can be inoperative or can be in limp home mode. the first results in a no start condition, the second lets the engine start and idle (poorly) but won't allow the engine to run over about 3000 rpm.
