Dumb question time...

Just seeing if you all drain the radiator of coolant in prep for replacing the water pump. Or just pull it and get just some coolant out? Not sure if the closed t-stat will hold most back.

I just recently replaced both the water pump and thermostat in my Sprint. I did not drain the coolant for either. Some coolant leaked out as I took the old water pump and thermostat off, but not enough to fuss over. Just top off the reservoir after you're finished and you should be fine.

i did a water pump on one of mine in july. i drained the radiator, flushed it out with water, took off the old water pump, took out the thermostat, flushed out the engine cooling system thru the thermostat hole, flushed out the heater core, installed the new water pump, re installed the thermostat, reconnected the hoses, refilled the radiator, and burped the system. i'd rather be thurough and do it right than do it again later.

You can drain the radiator but your still going to have some coolant run out when you remove the water pump. It does not matter. Just slide a pan under the car to catch it when you break the connection.

T-Stat was done a week ago, so I know the coolant was good. I didn't drain the system first, and it did drain a while when I loosened the water pump from the block.

I filled and ran it with the cap off, and so far things are looking better. The coolant level doesn't creep up and out after only a minute. Will see how she does tomorrow on the trip to work.

Good bye

I always fill the cooling system with the small hose loose at the top of the throttle body. This is the high point in the system and it will let out all of the air. When you get coolant in the hose and out of the throttle body, hook up the hose and reclamp.

Sounds like a good idea. Wish I had seen this a while ago. Will keep it in mind from now on, thanks.

or you can jack up the front of the car until the radiator cap is the high point of the cooling system.
