It's always best to get a fanatic to help with the cars. Regular mechanics have no respect for them.

I like happy endings. On another note, I really like 'happy endings'.

FIXED!!! I was a little frustrated at no reply so I was reading other topics and ran across the one where a guy put in a cam and could not get it running. He took it to a mechanic. I think I posted earlier this car has been to two different mechanics who did great work on my Camry and Dodge in the past. They mostly gave up on this little car. Soooo... On the other post I found geogonfa who live about 60 miles down the road from me. In utter frustration I sent him a PM. He called me in less than an hour and invited me down to have a look at it. He said he could smell the unburned gas when I pulled in and in two minutes decided it was the coolant sensor. He just happened to have one. He installed it and reconnected the MAP sensor and the thing purred. No more eyes watering from unburned fuel, no more 1500 RPM idle. No more nose dive on acceleration. Even if he had told me to replace the sensor, I would have screwed it up trying to get it apart. He also showed me how to release the wire retainers. He has an awesome XFI and took the time to show me how to fix the window regulator and was basically a wealth of knowledge. I am dang sure going back down there to get his help with the tie rod ends. I hope next time I get to see his vert. Long story short. Get with someone who knows the cars. Taking it to a mechanic is probably a waste of time and money. Thanks geogonfa and geometroforum. coolant sensor? as in temp gage inside the cabin or a different temp gage? Would a code scan have sniffed this out?

Coolant gauge sending unit provides guage signal. Two differant componets on his car.

coolant sensor in the throttle body...the sensor had a resistance showing it was stuck on cold ...computer went full rich...no code set, probably due to the ecm thought the engine was always cold...

Dang, if I didn't have a fault code, I would be just as lost as Pasotx. You know your stuff. Any other temp sensors that we should know about? After thinking about it, I would imagine there aren't, for the reason of, if there were 2 temp sensors sending messages to the metro brain and 1 said cold and the other said hot then there would have been a fault code or a check engine light.

I have this same problem in my '92 Metro, 18 MPG and I can smell the burning fuel. Any way someone in birmingham AL knows what the coolant sensor is and how to change it? I'm new to the forum btw so... hey!

here are some pics...
sometimes the connector will slide off if you push down on the center of the wire retainer...
some coolant sensors mount on the opposite side of the throttle body...

Sweet... looks like an easy fix, thanks for the quick reply! I just ordered a new sensor online, I'll post what happens after I install.
