Hi to all...'94 3/5 TBI with starting issue(s). I have had this car for many years and never had this condition. It went from running fine to refusal to start without a shot of starting fluid directly into TBI. would start immediately but not hold idle...had to pump gas pedal/RPM up to 2000+ to prevent a stall. I checked the flow into the TBI by removing fuel line and directing the gas into container while energizing to fuel pump and it squirts out about 2-3 ounces at a low pressure (similar to pouring out a glass of water slowly). I replaced the fuel filter with no improvement, then replaced the injector; also with no improvement or change in condition. I checked compression, all 3 cylinders measured 165 dry, did not test wet. located TDC on #1, rotor appeared slightly past pointing directly at # 1 terminal of the cap so I checked timing belt and alignment of markings. Belt was getting old so I replaced it even though the markings were in good alignment. changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor at the same time. All of this effort has not improved or changed the condition. battery is good and strong, all vacuum lines are intact, no check engine light or error codes were or are present. I rigged up a homemade fuel pressure gauge but was able to get a reading...so before I pull the tank to change the pump and sock (I already have a new spare one on the shelf) I wanted to run this past the forum for any other suggestions or previous experiences, thanks. |

What were the readings 1) ignition on, engine off and 2) at idle? This will tell us imediatly whats wrong. ![]() BTW Our little cars HATE it when you throw $$$ at them when you are just guessing. They tend to respond with little things like kinked hoses and blown fuses.

sorry, should have "unable to get a reading" the gauge was a zero to 100 psi air pressure gauge from Ace with appropriate hose nipples and clamps to secure in place. there was no pressure indicated...maybe this gauge was not good enough to get a reading... |

also should mention there was no reading on the homemade gauge even after starting and running at 2000+ rpm... |

Harbor freight has a nice cheap pressure gauge to buy or you can borrow one from autozones loan a tool program to check your pressure with. |

quick and easy without test equipment pull the return line off replace it with some clear plastic line , about 1/4" id run the engine if there is fuel flow , in the return line , without bubbles at idle or 2k rpm your fuel pump is "good" enough , move on to the next best guess if the engine runs and there is little to no flow in the clear return line or lottsa bubbles the fuel pump is about to fail -completely |

Thanks for the suggestion Webb...did the test today and there was nothing coming out of the return line, I had the revs at 2k for several minutes. I will proceed with changing the fuel pump tomorrow. any words of wisdom or similar experiences anyone would like to share will be appreciated... |

here's a suggestion. use the e8023 fuel pump designated for the suzuki swift gt instead of the tiny normally aspirated g10 fuel pump. you'll have to monkey around with fitting it to the hanger (all it will take is a longer screw in the clamp and a short piece of fuel hose) but i find that the stronger pump works better. |
