I found a 1996 engine to swap into my 1993 Metro. I'm pretty sure the long blocks are the same, but wanted to ask someone in the know. Can i install a 96 engine in my 93 or is ther something I'm overlooking?

Long blocks are the same. The 96 will have a crank sensor the 93 doesn't use, just leave the sensor in place to plug the hole and tie the connector up out of the way. Keep your 93 intake manifold and 93 distributor with the car, that will help you avoid many potential issues. The 93 may have an old style valve cover and the 96 a new one, either will work but the newer one has better internal baffling. Keep the crank, alternator and water pump pulleys matched up - you can use either the 93 or the 96 but all need to match each other - personally I'd likely go for the 93 so I wouldn't have to try to remember I needed to get a different belt at maintenance time. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Got 70 MPG?

You'll need to keep the thermostat housing from the old engine as well. The valve covers are the same from '93 and '96. I would use the '96 belts, pulleys, and timing belt stuff as the accessory pulley is one rib wider, much less hassle with squeaking belts on the updated design. The new timing belt is also 1" wide and has round teeth. It will last much longer than the outdated design from the '93.

Adding to the above statements...

Use all old sensors from the 93 block.

The 96 block has 4 bosses for the AC bracket, the 93 block only has 3 bosses.

The 93 block is different in regards to the oil pump. The 96 block has an opening for the crank sensor and the oil pump gasket is different because the face of the 96 block is machined differently for the newer oil pump.

You can install a 96 oil pump on a 93 block but you will have to use a new 93 oil pump gasket. Always use the same year oil pump gasket as the same year block.

The oil pan is different because of the crank sensor. Since you won't be using the crank sensor, you can just leave the 96 oil pan on.

Before installing the new engine in the car, make sure to clean the EGR tunnel in the head. The tunnel goes from the exhaust manifold, through the head and into the EGR. This tunnel usually gets blocked solid with carbon and does not allow the exhaust gases to get to the EGR. Also, there are small tunnels in the intake manifold too that should be cleaned with a pipe cleaner or thin wire and brake cleaner.
