I have a geo metro 1.o liter with an automatic, and im trying to figure out what would make a little knock noise, I can hear it quite a bit when I put the car in drive and accelerate, but when I put it in park and rev up the engine I dont hear it all, I have cleaned all the lifters, and I just did a complete rebuild 8000 miles ago? Im thinking Maybe could it be a rod knock? I would think so I just did a 600 miles round trip and it seems to run fine other than a little knock when it is under a load? Do you guys have any idea what it could be? Thanks.

What were your main and rod bearing clearances at overhaul?

Got 70 MPG?

It sounds like it could be rod knock. That usually doesn't show up unless the motor is placed under load.

Mabye a cracked flex plate? I have seen that, not in these cars, but have seen that in other engines, and it did produce a knock under load, nothing in neutral.

Grand Prixs were known to have that issue. It's possible, but it would be the first I've ever heard of this from a Metro

I have never seen that either in a metro. But, now that I think about it, If engine was overhauled, was the motor pulled? Loose torque converter bolts can do the same thing. You may think they are replaced tight, but it does not take much to have them loosen, I have seen that.

I used thread locker on the torque converter bolts, but a couple times I would have diffuculty starting like you could hear the solonoid clicking but it would not turn over like it was stuck? If I was to pull the oil pan Would I be able to tell if it was a rod bearing? Thanks.

Well when I first rebuilt it it drove fine it did not have that knocking noise, but five days after the rebuild I was going down a hill a big hill and I decieded to coast down it in neutral, so I put it in neutral, after I made it down the hill I put it in drive, and I heard a little pop, well my torque converter went out, So I had to pull the engine again and replace the torque converter, well ever since I had to pull the engine a second time that is when it would make a knocking noise. Is it possible I did not check the flex plate for cracks? Because after I first rebuilt this it did not make that noise, and I have been driving it like this for the last 7000 miles and have not heard change at all so im thinking it probally is not the rod bearings, because driving it that much the rod bearings you would think would start to ware out more? Thanks.

donno. just huntin and guessin. starter was one of the things you had to remove when you had the tranny out. thats when the "knocking" started. something not lined up properly when you put the tranny back in the car.

My vote would be to check for loose torque convertor bolts as well. Post up a video for us to hear it.
