The clutch plate itsself is notorious for dropping antichatter springs, the four smaller ones. when this happens there are all kinds of different things that may occour, depending on where the spring comes to rest. sometimes it will bounce around a while before deciding where to stop. it may lay benign untill you are 200 miles from home! i was able to pop into 2nd, and drive 200 miles in 2nd.

anyway, good chance that is it, but you will probably have to open it up to know for sure. are you haveing any other symptoms?

edit; you could be loosn' the lineing too?

Im talking about a flex plate in a 1991 geo metro with an automatic transmission? Im thinking my flex plate is makiing noise or it is my torque converter, the car only does when I put it in drive, Im going to pull try to get the engine pulled today, check my clearnce on my rod and main bearings, but Im 99.9% sure it is not those, I just bought a new torque converter fro $200, I wonder if they did not do a good jobe building that one, and that is making the knocking noise? This is just bugging me. And if my flex plate was making noise, and when I go to inspect it, it shoudl probally have a crack in it or soemthing, im I correct? Thanks.

If its cracked, yeah it can make noise's. And can drive you crazy too. If they are old cracks, they will have rust and gunk in the cracks, if they are fresh ,new ones, they will be very clean in the crack its self. Hope that makes sense.
