Different Size Tires - Good or Bad?; Can I put two different size tires per axle?

Hello All,

My 1992 Geo Metro LSi Vert has 14" wheels on it. The current tire size is 175/65R/14. The problem is they really fill the wheel well and can scrub on a speed bump or pothole, etc. :smackface I recently found a good deal on two good-condition used tires and my front ones were dry-rotted so I put the new ones on the front axle. Today I found an even better deal on new 165/60R/14 tires. If I get two for the back, they won't scrub nearly as bad being thinner and shorter, but will it affect my ride adversely? :hmm I know that usually you put bigger in the back, but the metro is FWD and the back wheels just follow...right?

Can the resident experts give me a little insight and advice?

Thanks,
Tearnie

hi teamie,

i run 185/60 14 tires on my vert without any problems - no rubbing and very little mpg penalty.

are you running on stock steel wheels? you have to be careful when selecting mag rims to make sure that the offset is suitable - 38mm to 42mm.
