I just removed my engine and put it on the stand, and I Just went and bought a green plastiguage? What is the tolerance for rod and main bearings? Geo glenn gave me this information below, But my plasti guage does not measure between .0008 - .0019? Plasti-gage is the easy way to measure bearing clearance. 0.0008" - 0.0019" is new limits. Service limits is 0.0031". Plasti-gage will give you matches for 0.001", 0.0015", 0.002" and 0.003". At least you'll know what range your clearances are in. This is with the green plasti-gage. |

Geo Glenn's information is correct. Plastigauge will give you a rough estimate of what the clearances are. As long as it's no further out than the .002" measurement on the plastigauge packaging, you should have close to new clearances specs. Once you lay a strip of plastigauge down into the crank and rod journals and torque it down to factory spec, you will take a strip of the measuring paper on the side of the plaigauge package and see what the clearances are. Youtube how to use plastigauge for a better explanation. |

Plastigage comes in 4 sizes: green (0.001"-0.003"), red(0.002"-0.006"), blue(0.004"-0.009"), and yellow(0.008"-0.016"). Geo Glens info matches my factory service manual: connecting rods, 0.008"-0.0019" standard clearance, limit at 0.0031"; mains at 0.008"-0.0015" standard clearance, limit at 0.0023". Either way, green plastigage is what you need if you don't have a micrometer. The green has marks on each side either in mm or inches. For inches, there are 4 measurements you can compare to, 0.001" (slightly larger than standard minimum size), 0.0015" ( still standard for rods or mains), 0.002" (still below max for rods, almost at max for mains), and 0.003" (damn near over the limit for rods and definetly over the limit for mains.
