I have been fighting this stupid EGR code 51 on my 89 metro Lsi for over a year now. I also had a bad valve lifter and it was ticking like crazy and was less than pleased with my econo cam and sprocket so, I bought a new head a few months back and a new EGR valve and finally got around to doing the swap. This last weekend I installed the following: Brand new EGR valve Rebuilt head with stock cam and spocket New head studs New spark plug wires New gaskets include head gasket, intake manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, throttle body gasket, EGR gasket Cleaned out intake manifold and exhaust manifold EGR ports with a flexible wire pipe cleaner and brake cleaner. This motor is completely top end rebuilt and ready to go. About a month ago I replace the entire distributor and ignition coil too. So I complete the build, set the timing around 8 degrees BTC and take it for a short 20 mile run. It is amazing! Runs better than ever before. Great throttle response, incredibly smooth sounding engine, acceleration very smooth all the way up well past 4500 rpm. Like a new car!.... 14 miles in... check engine light...code 51 again! Argh! Car still running great though? I did notice a couple odd things though. At one light, the idle was where it is supposed to be, around 800 rpm. The next light it was around 1500? I get home and let the car idle for a minute and it finally drops the idle back down to 800. Thoughts? |

I am suspicious of the tubing in the various parts of the EGR system. I have seen carbon buildup there. |

Any ideas on how to clean it out the whole system? |

Change out the vacuum lines, I have seen the one from the EGR to the solenoid above it get clogged up. Not a bad idea to change old vacuum lines anyway... Good Luck! |
