What Should A Good Body Shop Paint Job Cost?; What's your opinion on a good, quality entire paint job at a body shop.

I recently put a new hatch on my 92 LSi 3/5 and of course it's a different color than the rest of the car. I also recently redid the hood which is now a shade different than the car (and not clear coated). I've owned the car for a little over a year and my intent is to make this daily driver look like a 'new 92' as far as exterior. The body is in reasonable to very good condition. No real dings, all the imperfections were essentially in the shade tree mechanic paint job I bought it with.
I got a quote from a reputable Body Shop the other day. But I've nothing to compare his numbers with.

So, what should one pay for a complete paint job?
BTW, I got 2 quotes, one for exterior and one for the whole enchilada (Door jams, Underhood (everything but the engine bay))

Thanks

First, are they going to fix all the dings , feather edge all the chips and prime. Then the color choice can make a difference in price. Will they stand behind there work? To fix ding, chip, sand , tape off and paint car, door, trunk, and hood opening should be a grand are more. Any less and i would be worryed about quality of work.

The cost of restoring your body to "new" showroom appearance will be breathtaking, and will vary from state to state because of varying shop rates. The number of hours are in a data base and will stay pretty close as far as paint time and r&i time (remove and install time) The body work is not in a data base and is determined upon inspection of the vehicle. This is what will ring up your bill if you want that high end "new" showroom look. Your makeover can range anywhere from 1,000 to 50,000 bucks, depending on the condition of your car and how nice you want it. Taking it around for several estimates as you have been doing is wise and very educational.

complete, open doors, hood, hatch, dings, same color, full paint, no major body work, some minor body work, several coats+several clear coats, no metalic, will be around 3 grand around here.
EDIT: also have to consider if they have a climate controlled spray room and if they use a drying or "baking" area to harden the paint.

or--just a little sanding and shoot one coat at a production line rip off shop would be $450

Considering that you have 220v in the garage, buy a gun, compressor with dryer, primer, paint, and I'm at grand and beyond. :smackface And I have to teach myself how to do it. :news Pretty good learning curve. :gamerz

Automotive grade (loaded from an automotive paint store) spray paint will be around $250.00, including primer & clear coat. Kind of the route I'm leaning.

Rustolium job just under $100.00 when all said & done.

All depends upon how you want the job to look, how much you can justify, and what you can live with.

Body shops, around here range $1500-$2500 for a pretty decent job.

If it helps any, the metro in my signature is about 100 hours of work, journeyman style... it was probably a little rougher to start out with because of the hood flapping back and forth between the roof and closed position. I also had to grind off a 500 dollar paint job.

I got 2 quotes once, One was 3500 and the other was 450. Still thinking I may do this myself. It's starting to get colder so this may have to wait for the warmer weather to return.

With the economy the way it is, many auto painters are working out of their garages making some side money. This is a good place to find someone who will usually cut a deal from a body shops prices and usually take the time to do it right.

Agreed a guy that works in a body shop and the money is going to the body shop owner will give you a much better job at his house especially when the money goes to. .....him.....

When I had the Deerslayer painted, I got it done at an economy shop for $300. That actually included a little body work. That was about a year and a half ago. The paint is starting to peel off in places.

That being said, I wasn't expecting much for that price. It was covered with orange peel, but I got the body work done, and if it gets looking too bad for me (which is pretty bad) I'll try a rattle can job. I'd expect to pay at least $1500 minimum for a good job.
