Shifting gears w/o using the clutch; Pros and cons??
Topic Started: Sep 27 2012, 09:08 PM (1,488 Views)

I've read in a couple of places on the forum about shifting gears w/o using the clutch. I tried it today with good results ^o) , and was wondering if this would allow your clutch to last longer? Could there be any down side to the tranny? :shake (any potential damage) I'd like to hear what you guys think about this . Thanks in advance ! :thumb :thumb

I would imagine that unless you are perfect at matching the RPMs to float the gears, you'd eat your synchros.
Hopefully somebody that knows more about clutches/transmissions will chime in...

as long as you do it right it will wear your transmission very very little and your clutch not at all. miss a shift and you grind though which is the equivalent of many many many shifts so you will wear out much much faster if you miss the shift a lot. shifting without the clutch is for people who are nursing a nearly pooped out clutch.

when done properly it will not wear out your synchros.

remember, a clutch costs less than a transmission.

If done correctly shifting WITH the clutch will not wear out the clutch. The vast majority of clutch wear occurs when starting from a dead stop. Try doing that without a clutch. :whistle

hard on a starter tho.----------years ago I was stationed in Rhode Island for the winter. replaced my 55 Chevys 12 volt starter with a 6 volt starter. starter only lasted one season but no matter how cold it got that starter would really spin the engine.

Well, dwarren, that about covers it. Yes, it can work -- that's what synchros are for -- but it's really much easier to just use the clutch, the clutch doesn't wear enough to justify the savings (unless you're resting your foot on the pedal, or feathering in every gear), and broken transmissions are really expensive to replace.

The guy I bought my metro from over 5 years boasted about shifting without the clutch. When I dropped the manual tranny fluid it was like a Gold Mine! :rocker Also, plenty of black metal :shit . I cashed in the loot and bought 3 quarts of $8 each Synchromesh to get the smooth shifting back. :-/
