I dont get it... I some how am able to change my cam, cam sprocket in my 91 Metro and have zero timing issues.. I change the timing belt in a friends 91 vert and it decides to slip a day later(i am assuming)... I rotated engine two times with tensioner pully loose... Then while tension was on and everything was lined up I tighted it so there was no slack... Car ran like a champ(considerring it was dying anyway) at even 75 mph... 2 days later I get a phone call telling me about some problems... Is there a fool proof way to tighten the belt? According to the FSM it does says "When installing timing belt, match arrow mark on timing belt with rotating direction of crankshaft." ... Well my belt came without an arrow.pretty sure Autozone belt.. .. FSM says also says 5. Timing belt, tensioner spring and damper. With two sets of marks aligned and tensioner plate pushed up, install timing belt on two pulleys such a way the drive side(left?) of belt is free from any slack. Then install tensioner spring and spring damper, hand tighten tensioner stud.

also something i noticed on his... is the "v" mark for TDC doesnt seam to be at a true 12:00, from what i remember it seams alittle off,, like 12:02 ... Is it supposed to be at 12:00 and reference mark is just bent?

Maybe ill post some pics if its dropped off tomorrow...

So are there tricks or techniques that work well? Is there a way to make sure i do not over tighten the belt?

Any suggestions are appreciated...

Keep in mind the engine is tilted, and doesn't point straight up.

Are you sure the tensioner was tight and didn't slip loose? If everything was on, it'd hard for the belt to slip unless the belt is stretched or the tensioner is almost completely off. The tensioner doesn't have to tighten the belt up very much, it has a bit of play in it.

Timing belt change guide is here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/2232748/1/ I'd be more suspicious of the cam gear or the pulley on the crank, were either of those loose? The crank pulley has a woodruff key that if it gets loose wallows out the keyway in the crank and the camshaft pulley keys with an alignment pin that can get inadvertently moved out of place. Good Luck!

Are you using the correct belt?

The drive side of the timing belt is not the left. That is the tensioner side. The drive side is the right side that is straight. If you had the slack on the right side then the cam timing will be out.

To get the tension correct install the tensioner, arm and spring. Leave both bolts loose and rotate the crank two full turns letting the spring set the tension. Do not add tension after that. Tighten up the arm locking bolt and then the tensioner bolt and the tension is correct. Now rotate the whole thing again a couple of turns and check the timing marks.

Autozone is never wrong and always gives me the right parts... :rofl :rofl ...I got to see the car today.. Its actually running like a champ, timing mark is stable. So i am not even going to attempt to take it back apart... It did have alittle low speed miss, which went away... Took it out on the highway, went 75 mph no problem because the top was up. I hope i am wrong but it is night and day difference in performance/driveability with the top up or down.. Grant it the little engine is slowly dying. So it doesnt have the power of mine.. But that vert had issues going up an incline with top down and two people at highway speeds.. Top up and one person it did fine..

So i drove 10 miles topped off the gas,, came back drove off teh off ramp... stopped at a light.. Light changed , i took off normal, but then said I should beat on it alittle,,, it kicked down into 2nd at 45 it tried to even go into first and starting slipping all over the place... I never seen it do this.. Anyway drove like ahuman the rest of the way home and zero issues.. Fluid looks okay as far as its not burnt.. His professional mechanic told him not to touch it/change it.. Myself... Im like change it because its going to brake anyway might as well hurry it alone... or just end up with cleaner fluid and better shifts..

I would also change it twice in short perid of time. Just to have good rotation.

Long story short... The belt is okay... My friend just doesnt desribe things well,, definately not automotively inclined...

Thanks For alll Your suggestions...
