Noisy Five Speed; Chattery in all gears

My 98 hatch back transmission makes a chattering noise except when the clutch is pushed in or it is in neutral. It makes the noise in all gears including reverse. It perfectly corresponds to the engine RPM. When I shift gears, the noise starts at a lower pitch and increases with the increase in engine speed. I replaced the fluid about 1000 miles ago. I put in Pennzoil Synchromesh transmission fluid. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the fluid that came out. The fluid level wasn't particularly low. There were not any chips or issues in the fluid. The magnet did not have much collected. What is the problem? Equally important, does the transmission need immediate attention. The noise doesn't seem to be getting particularly louder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would tend to lean toward a bad throw out, as when you have the peddle depressed there is a load on it. when you let off of the peddle, the throw out fork returns the bearing to static position. it is then, that it is allowed to vibrate or bounce around.

did you notice anything before you changed the fluid?

there is an inspection cover on the bell housing, there are two 10mm head bolts holding it on. you may want to try checking inside the bell housing for debris. pieces of the clutchs lining may be found, or large amounts of dust. it could help give you further clues.

it is not to bad of a job to slide the gearbox back, odds are you are going to be doing it soon anyway. it might save you the cost of a tow!

any more symptoms or info, so hard to go forward with so little info.

I read a thread that said to put 2.6 quarts of transmission fluid in the fill hole. I did that and some fluid leaked out. There isn't any evidence that it leaks. I'll check the inspection hole.

From my experience, if it gets loud enough to where other motorists give you dirty looks, younger have about 100 miles left on that tranny. I would lean toward the throw out bearing, and check out your clutch cable adjustment. There are threads here that will guide you through proper adjustment, and it is free!

When you changed out fluid, how much came out? And did the noise start after you changed it out, or was it already a problem?

The noise was the same before and after. I am going to pull it and go through it. The car is way too good to risk a problem. I drive it 45,000 miles a year.

first -- the clutch plate springs are causing your problem.........second -- your throw out bearing is causing your problems.

basically I am betting that your problems are in the clutch area.
check the clutch cable adjustment and if that is OK then i believe it is time to get a clutch kit and start to work.
