Well, I knew that something was wrong in the front end. I suspected tie rods, so I checked those out and they were fine. The previous owner actually told me he had replaced the tie rods. So after jacking the car up and removing the tire (this guy must have wanted to kill me, because the lugnuts were NOT nearly as tight as they should have been), I found out that I have some horizontal play here on the passenger front side and I'm not sure where to start, when I had it jacked up I got some play out of the drivers side as well, but it's not really obvious when it's on the ground. The sound of the play feels like it's on outside of the car, not inside. What might I have to replace? Is there a guide on any of this stuff? I was completely prepared to work on the tie rods (thanks to the guide here), but this is something else entirely so I decided to just put it on hold until I get some advice. I have a few friends that are seasoned mechanics but I figured I'd see if I can get any pointers here first. ![]() (photo was from somewhere else on the forum, edited for clarification) |

The axle shaft is allowed some play in and out. If the rubber boots are ripped or they are making clunking noises when starting from a stop, then replace the axle shaft. |

Lug nuts are only torqued to 45ft/lbs, fwiw. |

Thanks. I'm not really a mechanic, as you can tell. The boots are fresh and seem to be greased well. I just know the front right tire sounds absolutely horrible when I turn it off the ground. Maybe wheel bearings or something. I could take a video and post it. I am getting a clunking sound when turning the wheel off the ground. |

Bearing or cv axle. I would guess you need a cv axle. |

Would bearings possibly make a loud clicking sound? Don't bad bearings typically sound like stones grinding? It seems to happen roughly once every full turn. Anyways, I've found some very helpful information here http://geometroforum.com/topic/2684296/1/ and here http://geometroforum.com/topic/1723441/1/ |

Ball bearings can get flat spots on them and make a clicking sound too. Ken.... |

Thanks. I just took it to a good mechanic to get it checked out and fixed. I'm comfortable cleaning the EGR valve, replacing stuff like the PCV valve, doing my own oil, changing brakes, rotors, spark plugs, wires, stuff like that but I'm not really comfortable knocking out wheel bearings just yet. At least if I screw up on the engine I'm pretty much just going to lose power and junk the engine. If I screw up wheel bearings I could lose a wheel on the road. So yeah. |
