Manual issues; Missing gears and lots of noise

I'm new here so please bear with me. I lost 5th gear first. No loud bang or rattling, just put it in gear and nothing.then gradually got louder and started to feel like there was a lot of drag on the car. Then 1st and 3rd went simultaneously. So I now only have 2nd and 4th, tons of noise/whining in gear, and a tranny that has plenty of really black fluid in it. Wondering if a remanufactured trans would be the way to go. I'm an amateur mechanic but I don't have the time or the proper work space to do this for myself right now. Can anyone recommend a shop that does decent work? I live around 30min from L.A.

A replacement transmission will fix your problems, of course.

Finding a good one from a salvage yard is hit and miss. There are different final drive ratios, so you need to make sure you get the one you want.

While you're in there, you will want to check the condition of the pilot bearing in the flywheel and the clutch release bearing. The Geo Metro clutch and pressure plate will last a long time, and may not need to be replaced. Check the rear main crankshaft for leaks. No leaks, no worries.
