SO I picked up this tranny at a scrap yard?; HOW DO I KNOW IF IT IS GOOD

So I picked up this tranny at the scrap yard, Im wondering if there is any way to tell if it is good? I was looking at it closer and it looks like someone took apart at one time because there is silicone seeping out at the crack?? Does that mean it could have been taken apart?
Or do you have to just throw it in a car and hope for the best? And is it hard to rebuild these? is it easier than rebuilding an engine? Thanks. :shake :shake :shake

These transmissions were assembled with silicone sealer from the factory, I believe. I would not disassemble it just because of that. And no, there is no good way to properly test it without installing it. You can put it in all the gears and make sure the carrier turns when you turn the input, but only a test drive will tell you if it will shift smoothly. Or you can disassemble it for inspection, but in my opinion, that takes longer than installation.

All of mine have that same silicone oozing out of the cracks. ^o) All have never been opened. :gamerz

Pretty sure the only way, to really tell if it's good :news , is to run it. :drivin

Mine too have the silicone "ooze". As mentioned I don;t know of any good way to test it without putting it in the car and giving it a try. Before you go to that much trouble, pull the drain plug and take a look at what you've got. You should not find any metal chunks (gear teeth parts), you likely will see some grayish residue (this is normal and is the fine particles worn off the gears) and a few "sparklies" the fewer "sparklies" the better as those are parts of the brass synchros. They do wear so don't be alarmed if you see some, if it looks like a first grader went nuts with the glitter then you might be happier with a rebuild first.

I haven't rebuilt one yet so can't comment on that part but there are several folks on the forum who have. Good Luck!

1. yup...silicone at the factory.
2. yup...check for excess glitter.
3. yup...running it will tell you if it's good.
however...before installing, it's reasonable to....
check under the triangular plate.
If any gears have chipped or worn, the pieces gravitate down there to the basement of the transmission.
If that's clear, then I'd run it with synchromesh.
If it's not clear of gear chips, wellllllllllll....you know the drill :)

I am new to this forum and I see that your post is a mounth old so perhaps it is too late to be telling you this. There are four combinations of gears on these transmissions be sure you know what you want and what you have. The information you need is availavle on this website

The factory uses 3 Bond, Yamabond. I think Cat. also has one. All about the same thing. That looks like a factory seal. Hard to tell what the condition inside is with out opening it up.
