It's an effective external cost reduction strategy, no doubt. However for the level of savings he's trying to achieve, I just feel the need to mention there's a strong potential for internal operations cost reduction. At a dime+nickel a day, things like every mile, every kWh, every therm of natural gas burned, every food item needs proper scrutiny. Just reading Nery's posts it's obvious he finds ways to be thrifty, and I commend him for that. Pinching pennies is good, but to do it effectively every budgetary line item needs a similar level of scrutiny. If one's going to spend energy asking others to save $4/mo, there's a good likelihood that level of savings (or more) can also be found through internal operations adjustment as well. Then he'd have $8/mo savings at least! Edited by maxmpg, Oct 8 2012, 09:44 AM.

True, you got to look everywhere and even then look at the trade offs. Lets say you carry your lunch vs buy, how much does it all add up for you to carry. Then at that, when you come home do you stop anywhere or at home do you eat more than you did when you ate out for lunch? When you carry your lunch do you buy more snacks from the vendoring machines than before? I had one in regards to paying a toll vs driving around. Well, its cheaper to pay the toll vs the extra driving just by factoring the mpg alone. Lets not forget time, wear n tear on vehicle, etc. Those states that seem to have benefits get you else where. Either the cost of living is higher, you pay more local taxes for stuff, you got to collect your empty bottles and turn them back in, etc. |

guys. first its completely legal. absolutely nothing illegal about what I want to do (yes I checked :-) UNLIKE car insurance (where it is fraud to use an address not where you will primarily use the car) there is nothing against the law about using any billing address you want as long as you have a legitimate right/permission to use that address. second its a matter of principle to pay 24% tax on $19. that just burns no matter how "small" the amount is. and its not SMALL. I don't care about the monthly cost I care about the aggregate. if you could save $500 just by changing an address in a web form. would you? lets see $4 a month times 12 months times 10 years. $480. not "chump change" anymore now is it ? "Do you buy Starbucks?" Hell no. Coffee sucks. period. hate coffee. now TEA. love tea $1-$2 a box name brand at big lots I STOCK UP :-) I just bought 40 boxes of Stash Pumpkin Spice. OH MAN this stuff is freaking heaven. its $6 or $7 a box in regular stores so I never tried it (I won't pay that much) at $2 a box I bought 40 and will keeping buying 20 a week till they run out. (I have had tea as long as 5 years tastes exactly as good as the day I bought it) and OMG last night I found Twinning Chai (not hazelnut or almond yuck just regular chai) my second most favorite tea in the world $250 a box !! I bought 8 and will buy as much as I can till they run out) I also don't buy splenda. rick (co worker) buys 4 coffee's every day from wawa (hates making it himself can't get the same taste hey his dime) so I keep all the extra packets of splenda he brings back (and honey) I have about 5 years worth of splenda and about 2 years worth of honey. all for nothing :-) "Do you go out to movies at a movie theater?" YEP one of my few entertainment outlets. $5 a movie :-) (I flat out refuse to pay $10 to see a movie) "Do you drive your Geo for times you could bike ride or walk?" before? yes I am 455 pounds it took a while to find a bicycle that would "hold" me. I now have one and ride it anytime I possibly can. even getting a trailer for it so I can use it to go shopping and not have to use the car. not because its cheaper (it is) but I desperately need to lose weight. "Do you buy ANY "gourmet" groceries instead of bottom-shelf store brand?" You have no idea. :-) I really need to do a thread on that topic think you guys might get a kick out of my stockpile and how much I paid for it (I like having 6 months of food in the house at all times) and I am a very cheap SOB :-) "Do you buy a large drink at a restaurant instead of water or buying the drink in bulk at a store?" Never water add some sugar if its nasty water. unless soda is included then diet. not for cost (though that is part of it) but because I am FAT and don't need the crap. as for tolls and driving around. this is dependent. the tolls around here are SO HIGH that many times I will drive around JUST BECAUSE the mpg's I get makes it cheaper than paying the toll. In the metro? cheaper to drive around. in the minivan? cheaper to pay the toll unless its the turnpike then even then its cheaper to go around if there is a viable alternative path (105% increase in the tolls!!!) for me its not "so much" about saving the money (though that is a big part of it) its a matter of principle. I don't like getting raped. and its about being efficient. (efficient also happens to be cheaper which is a nice bonus) $500 in taxes on a $19 account is rape. plain and simple. and if I can save that by simply typing an address in a web form 100% legally? you bet your butt I will do it. my cost is "zero" so why not? Get a prepaid phone...no tax at all on the service (at least in CA), and at least for me, works out to about $12/mo. |

yep. roughly 24% and its not fraud. entering a random oregon address is fraud. using an address I am permitted to use absolutely 100% legal for this purpose. Nope never got the trike. I got up $400 and it looked like I was going to be able to get it when I called to confirm and ask if he would hold it since I had the money I found out it was gone. too bad. I did find another bicycle. a day 6 dream 21 semi recumbent. so far its holding up well. I have lost 15 pounds so far. down to 440 this morning :-) I brike the seat the first week but have since repaired and reinforced it :-) Republic is $19 a month unlimited everything on an android handset. pretty nice actually. I do spend money on "not needed" things but I am ABLE to afford to spend such money on non needed things by being a "cheap ass" :-) hehe and a proud cheap ass. If I were a millionare I would still be driving a geo metro (just a diesel powered one) and I would still be trying to avoid this 24% tax. again this is not about the money this is a matter of principle. 24% tax on a $19 bill is disgusting. linky http://www.smartmoney.com/spend/technology/states-ranked-by-taxes-on-cellphone-service-1310670564768/ note there are some "fixed" taxes in this calculation and since this is based on an assumed average bill cost the percentage is "higher" the lower your actual bill is (since a few of the taxes are "fixed") ie a $1 tax is 10% of a $10 bill but 20% of a $5 bill. yes 250. so I am 190 over that. but so far its holding up. the manufacturer said they think it will hold up fine that the rear wheel might prove to be a problem but the frame should take the weight. so far frame and wheel are holding ![]() Horn that is not a solution. waste of letters man :-) |

Republic may not offer service in Idaho. Cell phone providers (or those leasing time off Sprint) are pretty restrictive here. Plus, they have to file with the Idaho Tax Commission to sell cell time here and go through a lot of red tape. Not every company is willing to go through the hassle. In Idaho itself, it's pretty much just Boost and Virgin for no contract, pay as you go providers. |

Thats hard to believe. Wonder what the idea was behind that to begin with? And I hate to pay the dollar 911 tax when I buy a phone card for my track phone. At least its just a dollar.
