My friend has a -91- 1.0 vert auto.. it has ????? but the speedo reads 26k So 126k, 226k who knows... It is a used basket case... Anyway the car was having problems even going 45mph,, The previous owner said" i used to drive it 50 miles everyday blah blah"" Anyway My friend got it running decent finally... now the transmission during the warm day..when your driving maybe 45mph and you floor it it will kick down to 1st instead of just kicking to second (floored) that 1.0l doesnt really like to spin at 6000rpm.. Anyway he describes as slipping because it kinda just stays there(not shifting from 1st to 2nd) till you let off it will kick into 2nd or 3rd... however at night it doesnt act like this... it will drive like a normal car....

I am thinking change fluid and filter, it doesnt appear to be burnt (dark brown and no smell) its some what red... .. His professional mechanic says you shouldnt change fluid that has been neglected because clean fluid can bring on some problems.... I remember back in the day at Jiffy Lube.. we would nt touch a car if the transmission fluid mileage was over 75000 and not changed..So i can see where the professional is coming from...

So should it be changed,,, or just neglected somemore and live with teh weird shifting at times? ..... .

First I am no trans mechanical engineer...., my opinion is not only to change the fluid but flush it also...then adjust down shift cable to shift to your liking....short is rpms.....loose is quicker to up shift low rpm.....

Under normal conditions the rpm at which it shifts up to 55 or whatever is normal... But its just when hot running it will kick into 1st at 45 and not have anywhere to go..unless you let off gas alittle then it will shift to 2nd... I need to drive his car more to explain it.. he cant explain it all.. he is trying to blame the timing... The car is @ 10 BTDC and its running better now then it ever has... 6 degrees was alittle sluggish... and still slipped ..if we go any less to avoid teh problem it will make it about as fast as walking.....

So if you loosen the shift cable which is attached to throttle linkage when accelerating you will shift at a lower rpm? i can see trying that....

If i could have my way I would change fluid and flush too.. however i have heard a few horror stories about flushing a transmission... not geo related though....
