Trust me... I'm a college aged kid and these gas prices are totally killing me here in Southern Cali.
I have a 1993 metro luckily and also an automatic Nissan Maxima that I've been using for driving short distances around the area more as my 'luxury car' but have been considering selling that and getting a newer 1998-2001 metro as my luxury car hahaha

If you want "luxury", trick out a manual Vert with all the accessories. Then you can take down the top and smile at all the Camero verts :D B-)

ahh trust me I look for those convertible metros but to this day I have yet to even see one on the road! I think it has something to do with our crazy smog laws but I don't know. Rarely do I see them on craigslist either and when I do they want way too much money for them :/

California is what I call "The Land of Smug".
People move here wanting to live the non-existent "California Dream" and want to make it big in "Hollywood" and overcrowd the place with their stupidity. They want to be the people on tv only to find out that its expensive and not worth it, they finance the rest of their lives just to show off. The reason gas is up the butt is because all these people bring their cars and so the demand for gas goes up...and the price follows. The tourists dont help either :news

We have it beat by amost a buck. And I think that blows. The only thing that is positive about it is pulling up next to big trucks and asking them what it cost to fuel it up. :lol

One of the problems down there in Humboldt is the local gas baron Renner controls the price. Was always guarenteed to be higher than anywhere else. Thought I got away from that, but above Spokane we have the same problem. Other than the Indian res, gas is always .15 cents higher minimum, same price at every station, no competition allowed. Gas baron here claims its the price of trucking into the area, but go further out in the next county where there is a different supplier, but same truck route and :O , suprise, suprise! Gas is the same price as Spokane.

Why you Mutt!

A station about a mile away from my home just DROPPED by a whopping 8 cents/gallon...maybe a trend?

At least diesel hasn't been affected much... :D

California's main problem is the state requires a very special and specific gasoline formulation. By law. This formulation is refined in California...and ONLY California. So when two Cali refineries go down (like they have), retailers are unable to import gas from other states to make up the supply shortfall because such gas is technically illegal to sell. CARB would be crawling up people's asses if they were selling Washington gas, Oregon gas, or Nevada gas. The result is high prices and Carter-esque lines at the pump.

California deserves what California continues to vote for. But if the people there are willing to spend an hour in line to pay $6/gallon so the air is .0037% cleaner, then live and let live. I guess. But I damned sure don't feel sorry for them. I personally believe there should be only TWO gas formulations for the entire country, as Cali is not the only state that requires a specific blend.

"Winter gas" and "Summer gas". That should be it. Northern states could switch to winter gas in the fall, southern states can run summer blend all year if their climate permits. Prices would fall...

There it is, problem solved. But the rabid, myopic eco-freaks running California will never go for it.
